Alpha Mule
OK, I've been having a think (scary!): At what range does a bog standard (pick your own variety) HMR round drop back through the sonic barrier and thereby suffer from the instability of passing back from supersonic into the realm of subsonic? For that matter what about the quick varieties of .22LR too?
kyska
Well, with a ballistic calculator it says that a 17g bullet will drop to around 950fps at around 180 yards, but this doesn't take in to effect the BC of the bullet, as I don't know how to do it, so my post is most likely a load of ********. wymberley
Know nowt about stability, but 275yds, give or take (1117 ft/sec ish). There's quick and there's quick, 50 - 60 yds ish.
Catweazle
I seem to remember that the fastest 22LR were supersonic to around 95yds.
wymberley
I seem to remember that the fastest 22LR were supersonic to around 95yds. Yep, undoubtably, but I picked the more usual 40gr up to about 1300ft/sec at the muzzle.
