A day in Yorkshire

Went out today for a go at the pigeons in Yorkshire on some land accessed through NPPC. I was set up by 0945 with 10 full bodied decoys out in a horseshoe pattern. Myself tucked up against a hedge behind my hide with camo gear and face veil. 10 minutes in and 2 pigeons dropped into the pattern, one never left :D , so off to a good start one cartridge = one pigeon. Or so I thought, nothing moved for another hour, can't decoy if nothing flying past or in the area  . Anyway stuck with it and after a good while waiting plugged another pigeon  .

I then decided to move to the other side of the field near a wood as I'd seen a few birds dropping into the wood and thought I may be able to decoy birds as they entered the woods :sly: .

Well again I had to wait ages just to see birds in the air let alone near or in my pattern. There was a big bird of prey cruising round but it didn't seem to be spooking any birds that were in the air. I had thought it might have been scaring birds away but it didn't seem interested in other birds.

After a while I had a few missed opportunities at pretty easy shots, then managed to down one more pigeon. I've started missing more and more recently, don't know why but it's really frustrating. Especially when I've travelled about sixty miles to shoot over some rape stubble in the hope of getting a decent bag. So a long day out for three birds taken a few missed and not enough seen in the skies around. :(

Still nice to get out though in the peace and quiet

Cheers

Mick

is the nppc worth joining ??

I was told by John who runs it that research is the key to getting success from it. This is why I decided to go and spend some time looking at different fields and farms.

But so far, seen nothing that it worth spending my time on. But for £125 I thought joining was worth a punt.

So I will reserve my judgement until the winter and see how much shooting I've had. :hmm:

It may not have been a big bag day, but you got some fresh air, fired the gun and chilled out. :good:

The big problem of being so far away from your shooting, is you don't know whats going on.

Somebody could have been shooting that field hard for the couple of days before you turned up.

I don't know anything about how the NPPC operates, but would you be able to call at the farm and find out if anything is about, or if someone has been shooting the field ?

Its that sort of information you need.

Yes the problem I have is the recon part. Not knowing exactly where the birds are or as you say if anyone else has hit the place hard previously. I just go have a look round for likely looking fields and flight lines and give it a go.

I always enjoy my shooting, getting out in the fresh air but its just a bit frustrating when there's not much around.

I have some permission more local to me but the pigeon population isn't that great but there is only me and my father in law that shoot there.

I thought i'd give nppc a go after reading various posts about it. I haven't made judgement yet. I will when my years membership is up and I can tally up my days out.

Sounds to me like you were shooting at the wrong time of day. The pigeons are done and dusted and roosting by 8am where I shoot. Then it is patchy until around 5pm. Also, you need others shooting on nearby fields otherwise the birds just go elsewhere.

The problems mooted about NPP seem to be from those who simply drive into their designated area and shoot without doing any meaningful research. I drive round my shoot most days and I can't predict where the pigeons will be from one day to the next so just turning up, plonking down where told and hoping for the best isn't likely to lead to much success.

i keep going up to the nppc harrogate site and have tried the differnet field has the rape been cut yet? i was up 3 week ago and it was a total waste of time. I tend to go over once a month to have a look, theres pigeon in the woods and a few birds of prey but they must be better food for tnem at the moment.
