JR1960
I had one, my mate had one, both complete ****!! Shame, because i really liked the motor, just couldn't keep up with the repairs. Mate's they ended up replacing the whole rear axle and it still vibrated like a bitch at 85. Dealer said he shouldn't be doing 85, hardly the point is it? In the end they took it back and gave him a full refund. I ended up trading mine in during the week nothing went wrong with it, after a long and undistinguished list of faults including a new engine. I guess we could just be unlucky but i know of a few others who have had similar problems.
four-wheel-drive
I have a 2000 XJ 4ltr petrol very good off road I have not had many problems with it over the seven years that I have had it but I have heard that the Diesels are not good the head gaskets tend to go on them but the biggest worry with them is the electrics its impossible to steel them as the immobilizers are so good. I have herd of people scrapping them because they could not get them to go sounds daft but it has happened the problem is its all controlled by the computer and being an American car it seems to be to complicated for our electricians to sort out if there is a problem with it.. MITCHF
Fuel pump - when they go they are expensive and rare second hand. Rear axle - common for them to need replacing or rebuilding Heater matrix and head gasket - again a common one Speaking from experience
Redditch
Fuel pump - when they go they are expensive and rare second hand. Rear axle - common for them to need replacing or rebuilding Heater matrix and head gasket - again a common one Speaking from experience  Mate had a wrangler with the 2.5 petrol. Gearbox, transferbox, rear axle, water pump, alternator, all repaired replaced within 2 years, and then repaired or replaced again, and fuel consumption was attrocious too I just bought Frenchie boys Frontera, and will be happy when I pick it up
margun
I have a 1998 2.5TD Cherokee. It has the Italian VM engine(from old RR and Rover 825). This engine has a wierd configuration of a seperate head for each cyclinder, which are prone to cracking. The symptoms of a cracked head are pressurising of the coolant expansion tank, so regularly check the coolant levels and bleed if necessary (bleed valve at top left of radiator). Also, as someone else said, the rear axle is prone to bearing noise on all cherokee models, although touch wood mine is quiet. I bought mine from a mechanic friend who shoots, he acquired it with a cracked head for £100. Total cost of fixing (including new head, skimming old heads, new gaskets, oil, coolant etc) with labour done in the evenings by him and myself was ~£500, so I got mine at a good price. I use mine as a daily drive and it costs a fortune to take on my long commute, but not as much as I'd expected (about £15 for 70 miles on the motorway). It is good off road, OK on road and obscenely comfy. If the price is good (less than £1k) then go for it, just treat the coolant system as god.
