bk
With people talking about how their cabinets are mounted it got me thinking about a strong room. It doesnt apply now as I only rent but if I was to get a house with a decent dry cellar and brick walls, with a vault door, does the ceiling need to be concrete or steel? Kes
The simple answer is ask your area FEO - if you do buy a house with a cellar, get him to advise on security. In truth the door is tthe key as there are no windows usually but watch how damp it may be as damp and guns do not party.
bk
In my old house I had to keep my guns under the stairs in the cellar and had to rig up a bulb to keep them dry. I presume if the strong room is passed then you can have gun racks? What is the score with reloading and ammo, as they would be in the same locked environment so not adhering to normal FAC rules?? HDAV
I think you would need a safe/box in the strongroom to store ammo? But not the components.

Dekers
A pal of mine does have a substantial old house with a big cellar, within the cellar is the boiler room, storage rooms, STRONG room! He keeps his guns there, it is not damp, actually it's warm/hot, and dry, and if anything dusty, and the strong room is exactly that, a serious steel door and locks! He has it set up a treat and NO cabinets in the conventional sense, just storage cupboards, bench, cleaning area! A Cabinet is NOT specifically required, storage up to an acceptable level of security is what is required, and for simplicity this is usually achieved with an appropriate Cabinet. Nevertheless, as has already been said, if in any doubt contact you Firearms Dept for clarification!
Vince Green
He keeps his guns there, it is not damp, actually it's warm/hot, and dry, and if anything dusty, He is very lucky in that case because most cellars would be too damp to store guns long term

bk
What about a single skin brick corner to a garage with alarms etc??
cockercas
Single skin brickwork is damp. I fancy a gun room when I buy my own house. Very shortly I hope.
HDAV
What about a single skin brick corner to a garage with alarms etc?? I doubt it, having seen one recently constructed its made of the heavy duty (20kg each) concrete block laid flat! and a reinforced roof ( I have known shops burgled through the roof)
