VW Transporter van

Have any of you gentlemen ever had any dealings (good or bad) with these vans, only Im looking at upgrading soon from the 01 VW Caddy. The Caddy has been a superb van, but could do with the extra space in the back and the 3 seats in the front for the school run

Thanks in advance

I used to have a t4 lwb transporter van from new, and my dad has had 2 of the t5 transporters, both 130 bhp, very nice inside, not cheap at 20k for a van, but very nice, we mostly have VW in our house, we have 1 van, a golf and a polo, soon to be a toureg soon too! Buy one, they hold the money well, well built, nice inside, very comfy cab! My old man travels most of the uk with his work and it has NEVER let him down! German engineering! :good:

Dont do it !!!

I have a 2007 T5 130bhp (thats broken horse power)

It has had go wrong.......oil cooler, front drive shaft, inner & outer and gearbox output, turbo oil seals, catalytic convertor, 2x Major electrical melt downs, Dual mass flywheels X2, clutch X2, it eats front brake discs and pads, the interior panel clips break regularly, the sliding window mechanisms break (apparently it's because people use them) ohh I forgot, Power steering pump and rack.

Edit : Forgot the gear stick & linkage failed, Handbrake jumped whilst driving on second day I had it and broke

VW Warranty is strictly 100k, vehicle lasted to 97k before going wrong big style. Would I buy another one ? NO

Would I recommend anybody else buy one ? Not unless I really didn't like them

I had a T4 race van, lowered with 18 inch RS 6 alloys and viper stripes, had seats and a bed in the back as well. Looked the mutts. It went the distance when my bikes went.

Have a read of the t4forum.com, wealth of knowledge on there on both t4's and t5's. Take 10 mins to check out what some of these guys do to their vans aswell, you will be amazed.

Cheers

A friend of mine's had most of that go wrong with his too. You get good and bad with most makes but I've heard of a lot of VW's with flywheel ,clutch and gear box trouble and not with heavy use.

I bought a T4 from a animal feed supplier. Was hanging so got it cheap. Spent bit of time cleaning it and custom made a bed, cupboards etc for it in back. Was a awesome van great to drive, ultra reliable. Especially when you consider it had 170,000 on clock and original engine. I'll fire some pics up if I can find em. As said check out forum too.

Yes I do,

But as it's mine and I have to pay the bills, and the licencing and the not inconsiderable fuel bills, It's not ragged.

And is main dealer serviced every 6000 miles NOT 12-18000 miles as per VW's claimed 'Long life' service intervals.

I've two friends in the same line of work who have T5's and both have had many similar issues.

There was a guy that I saw on the M2 a few times in an LT that was sign written up with some very anti VW text. He'd obviously had a very bad experience with VW and his wagon was a right lemon. The warranty didn't appear to be worth a rub. He certainly vented his spleen.

They don't build them like they used to.

Every time i changge my vans i goto the VW dealers and look at the new T5's.They are a nice van for certain but at 20k i just cant do it,i have run Renault Traffic for 8 years and 140k miles. No mechanical let downs but an ignition barrel, side door track, wiper adjustment and the usual consumables across 2 vans and 12k eack.Transporter vs traffic its buy 2 get one free,a no brainer for me.

Conversely,

I have a 2005 registered Transit 12 seater Minibus, that is used for work and has had Nothing but an oil & filter change, brake pads/discs as required through wear & tear.

And much more ecconomical to boot.
