North Wales pigeon decoying

Hello all,

yesterday saw myself and shooting buddy ( philmypower ) try our hand on some cut stubble.

The day didnt start well, to our horror the planed field was already in use by a man decoying corvids so we were forced to shoot the top filed, a field that neither of us knew that flightlines or feeding pattern on :look:

We set up and constructed a horseshoe pattern from dead birds and sat back anticipating some feeding woodies, sadly the weather was not in our favour and a strong wind changed direction, forcing the birds straight over the hedge above our heads presenting ultra fast snap shots. After an hour phil had dropped a crossing pigeon and i was fortunate enough to drop a crow which took a liking to my newly bought Flextone Crow call , we decided to change positions and opted for the far end of the field, with the wind blowing towards us.

This was done quickly and very soon the pigeons came flocking in, in a space of 2.5 hours we had had quite a bit of shooting and our dead decoy pattern was growing at an alarming pace, in some instances i couldnt load fast enough and several birds flew from the decoys untouched.

Phil was dropping birds with his new side by side like a pro and the majority of birds that came our way got dropped, in one instance i shot a fat wood pigeon that bombed towards our decoys, and then when got caught in my shot pattern bombed toward me, narrlowly missing me and hitting the hedge.

Some jackdaws came in and i dropped a crosser and then frustratingly missed the opportunity for a left and right pigeon as i had only one shot left, Phil then shot into a large group of woodies and dropped two with one shot, dropping another as it flew over our hide!

By 4.30 the flight line had gone dead and our counterpart in the below field had stopped shooting long ago, he said he gave up as all the birds flew to our decoys before his!

The total bag was 3 crows, 1 jackdaw, 5 ferals, 32 pigeon ( four which sadly could not be retrieved due to them landing in a wood

All in all a great day :good:

P.s the corvids didnt make itinto the photo line up, straight into the decoy bag :P

Wasn't that good of your counterpart to let you go up wind on his flight line,i do hope you thanked him for his kindness, for without his kindness you would have had nowhere to shoot.
