Wildfowling: Why auto's and not O/U?

Hi all,

Sorry if this has been addressed previously but I'm new the forum and couldn't find anything...

Was just wondering why most wildfowler's prefer semi auto's to an O/U. I would have thought the usual benefits of an O/U such as different choke barrels would still be an advantage? And surely there are more things to go wrong with an auto especially in the harsh environment they are used in?

What am I missing?

Mostly 3 shots and the bigger chamber, usually synthetic as salt air destroys wood and other metals. Also the recoil from those massive loads is easier on the shoulder as a lot of the shock is absorbed by the movement of the cycling :good:

Easier to load from confined condition, less felt recoil, generally available of sythetic build, 3 1/2" and steel proof widely available. Most of all three shots the action can be a time in coming and you need to take fullest advantage when it does it might be your only chance, shooting Teal and the likes you dont get many triples (1 4 1 shots) but tend to flare them with the first shot giving you the chance of a pair with your second and third, on geese it gives you a reserve shot for a wounder- personally i never try for 3 from a skien. Decent Semi Autos are not the deamonisic Jambers you might imagine either
