Steve177
Hi all, Is it safe for dogs to eat rabbits that have got Mixi, the reason i ask is that on my nearest permission, i noticed a few rabbits had mixi, so they were burnt, but few dags ago the dog ( an Alaskan Husky) caught a rabbit, and last night, and this morning, he just doesn't seem himself, his poos are ok, and he is eating as usual, but as my local permission is about 3/4 a mile away in the countryside, im wondering if this could be the cause Thanks

Norrie
Myxomatosis only affects rabbits , so your dog will be fine only thing to bare in mind if you have pet rabbits at home it could be spread to them from your dog Hiya, Dr Brian Plummer wrote in his book Modern Ferreting ( fantastic book ,well worth reading) about how he ate all the Myxi rabbits he caught, he lived long after the book was written..... So, no harm to either you, or your dog.. BUT, I wouldnt eat one, nor give one to my ferrets either...:)Just me being a woose... On Friday night, I shot a couple of Rabbits, one with fairly advanced Myxi , which was buried, the other with the first stages of Myxi, which I didnt notice till I took it out the salad tray in the fridge yesterday to feed the ferrets with......wife says...whats all those dozens of little dots in the bottom of the tray ??........LOL, Dead Fleas!!!!! I've now to get my own fridge put in the shed... :good:

Dekers
Mixxy has been around in this country circa 60 years. There has NEVER been a case diagnosed in anything but rabbits, and lets face it the fox has been eating mixxy rabbits for all that time, and so have we. There are no symptoms to be seen in a rabbit for the first day or two, 1000's of people, probably hundreds of 1000's of people have eated mixxy rabbits in that time without knowing it or suffering any effects! Wharf Rat
Mixi rabbits taste better. Tenderised on the roadside with a shovel when spotted from the car, the sores produce a natural condiment with a taste not unlike mayonaise. Cook them thoroughly though, rabbits can give you worms. halfbee
I peeled a mixi rabbit the other day and planned to eat it but it was so skinny it wasn't worth it. I guess it was struggling to feed so it lost body mass.
