J@mes
So you reckon your trooper is any faster or more fuel efficient than say a 300TDi Discovery? Or any more comfortable, or any warmer inside? Everyone knows that you have to have a certain "passion" to own a defender as an every day car, but vehicles like the Discovery and later range rover classics are a totally different ball game. HDAV
HDAV Not going to argue with you about japcrap still going after 50 years, I need an off road vehicle to keep my business going. Landies came out about 1947, and 70% of them are still going. Horses for courses, and with the terrain I travel I have yet to see anything that can beat the landy. With over forty years experience with landys off and on road in the farming industry I stick with what I know is best. I dont doubt it for your use, but for the OP getting his missus to work in a bit a snow as a daily driver for a budget of £2k you are seriously recommending a landrover defender? For £2k you'll be looking tidy S3 money, might get a Disco or a a pile of freelanders. The Toyota FJ series weren't really ever sold in Europe only Japan and the US/south america, go into the amazon basin and you dont see many landrovers but you do see a lot of Toyotas and a lot of old 4x4's. Oh and a frontera made it up snowdon TWICE. Modern Jap and Korean 4x4 are cars, plain and simple Landrovers defenders et al are/were half commercial half tractor not a car. Compare them to other similar vehicles UMM, Pinzgauer, Unimog, they are very similar.
Redditch
What about a pajero, there in you price range plus there not rust buckets Shogun is just the UK selling name for the Pajero/Montero, Pajero and Montero is the name used on the rest of the continent. scutt
4x4 for 2k then it has to be an old motor so repairs come into the running costs price jap spares and service parts = landy spares and service parts as you say in your post you,l get rid after the winter landys do seem keep there value.just a thought.atb
Redditch
Do they do a SWB Shogun or are they all long? I'm trying to gather ideas for when the P38 has to go and I get an Estate and a 4x4 toy. They do a smaller one, but I think it´s under another name again, Pinin or something like that, but it didn´t sell well. They then brought out a swb version of the Shogun/Montero/Pajero and sold better. The Pinin had a lot of problems, so best to stay clear of those. crosshair
HDAV Yes a Frontera went up Snowdon twice, and left there, from what I read it had to be winched down. One of the comments earlier said landies were cold, the modern one's warm up as quick as any car, even in the coldest weather, and I'm quite happy coasting at 70mph in my defender. There will always be a difference of opinion about 4x4s, and you are all entitled to yours, the thing is I live and work off road, unlike some who call driving on the pavement off road. Over the years I have owned a Range Rover, Discovery, Freelander and dozens of defenders, so I do have some experience. One of the biggest drawbacks with the modern, all singing dancing off roaders is the array of electric gadgets, just more to go wrong, I just hope that the new defender will not go down that road. And good luck with whatever you choose to buy.
J@mes
Be a damn site more reliable than a Landy  It wouldn't though, would it? There's nothing on them to break down as such. I had a 300TDi disco for 18 months and it cost me a window regulator (£22) and an ignition barrel (£30) All the "jap is more reliable, landy will go anywhere, japs don't rust, landy will break down more, japs cost more to service/repair etc etc" is a load of ******** really. The ONLY thing is that the 200/300TDi age discos do rust.
four-wheel-drive
Land rover, the only vehicle that has stood up to the mountain work that I give them. Seen the Jap stuff come and go, but you wont see the jap stuff still going after more than fifty years like some landies. I agree its like triggers brush he said that he has had the same one for fifteen years and it has only had five new heads and twenty new shafts Land Rovers will go on forever if you replace the chassis with a galvanized one and everything else as it wares out. BrowningDJC
For under 2k you could find a very clean pajero with all the toys, excellent offroad capability, super select 4wd so can be driven on the road in 4wd in the snow. Can be thirsty but excellent vehicles for the money. Forget Land rovers in your price range, most will need welding and will be getting very tired! I swear by jap 4x4's as me and many friends have had many bad, and expensive! experiences with land rovers.
