Afternoon walkabouts

LOVE this time of year! A couple of weeks until we start on the driven birds, so Ive got a local permission that I can usually manage a few walked up days over with mates. It's never big bags, usually just a handful of shots / birds, but its a lovely walk. It shoots better earlier on in the season as it only has natural cover, which, by Xmas is pretty thin and the birds then start to drift off to the woods.

I was out with Tom0787 off here, he couldnt get over early and his 1pm turned into 2.30pm by the time we got going. He bought 15 month old Leo over, as the shoot is ten times better with a dog to flush the game. It was Leo's first ever time out with the guns and in an area with game. He did really well, didnt range too far ahead and managed to put up quite a few birds - unfortunatly most caught the wind and flew out off the permisson.

After maybe a dozen birds leaking out of the wrong side of the hedge, we split and covered both sides of a hedge with a fair bit of cover - half way up the hill a cock got up on toms side and a hen on mine. Tom had only loaded one shell (long story!)and missed, I allowed mine to get up a bit and she caught the wind and came back almost over head - a nice testing shot and down she came! Leo had a go at finding it and after a bit of encouragement found her and got his first ever taste of warm feathered game!

The next hour or so was fairly quiet, so we turned around and re-traced our route out. About 500 yards from my house we worked the last section of hedgerow where Ive put a feeder this year and it seems to be working holding a few birds in the area, again the winning tactic was to cover both sides of the hedge. Tom called straight away that Leo had pricked his ears and as he stuck his nose in the cover a nice pair of hens burst up - I missed with both shots! As I'm stood there with an empty gun, tom calls 'Cock' and a fat birds buzzes right out in front - no shells in the gun, no shots! I'm still stood there bemused when another hen flushed behind me, I just had time to spin, jam a shell in the top chamber, switch barrels as I closed the gun and bought her down about 40 yards out - real snap shooting and a fantastic few minutes!

This sums up rough shooting for me - not the numbers of shots but using fieldcraft to flush the birds and a nice amble around to boot.

Sounds like a great way to spend an afternoon - Good company, a young do that worked well and a few shots, nice one! :good:

As for not having your gun loaded when you needed it, fair doos to you for admiting it, there are many others that wouldn't have said anything or made up an excuse!

Paddy - you would be most welcome to come over for a walk around. Ive got a guest this weekend, so lets sort a date out after then?

Great news re. Bam Bam - nearly ready to go this end, crate and kennel etc - she has another 3/4 weeks yet? So she will be massive then!?
