Rats on feeders

Recommended Posts

Just put the rat poison in money bags (them you get from the bank for free) rip a small hole in the bags and push them down the holes, the bags will keep the poison dry and you will be able to get the poison a good way down the hole so nothing else will get to eat it.

Job done.

Great fun with an air rifle and the birds should not be too bothered, just set up 20-25m down wind and wait for them to come out. Usually on last light but if it is a major infestation some will be out during the day.

Come on lads get real if he hasn't got time to check traps how is he going to find the time to sit up with an air rifle and shoot them

Easily I would think, I am assuming that he has not got time for daily visits, ie as required by law to check traps, but can maybe spare a couple of hours someetimes during the week, otherwise how are the feeders get checked / refilled.

As a footnote, the only way I have found to effectively get rid of rats is to poison them. They soon get traps wise and you will only even shoot a fraction of the rats present. Smoking out, terriers etc are great but will cause too much disturbance mid shooting season and are best used once the gameshooting has finished.

Just a quick won,, got rats on my feeders and need to get rid of them. Can't do tunnel trapping as I haven't the time.. Can I just put loose bait down the holes and cover them up.

Partly fill bank note bags with a mix of loose bait and a touch of hot chocolate powder, put these down the hole and cover

Poison them, 3 ways:

1, Get a good supply of small change bags from your bank, 3 scoops per bag, pop a bag down each hole pushed home with a flexi stick.

2. Dig a hole about 3 inches ( 75mm) deep and about the size of a takeaway plastic container, dig angled entry channel from surface into hole. Place container in hole, fill with rat poison, place plywood board over hole, hold in place with a couple of bricks. Locate within a few feet of the feeder, bait with poisoned wheat.

3, Use a dedicated poison dispenser, again place close to feeder, within 2 feet.

I find that I use most bait with method 2, the delight of method 1 is that the bags being plastic keep the poison fresh until it is eaten. My least favourite is No3, even in heavy rat infestation areas I don't go through a lot of poison with 3. A No 2 close by will move far more.

Check poison level every 7 days and top up as required. Collect any bank bags you see on the surface but make sure that you always wear gloves as protection against weils disease.
