I am after a bit of advice for making my own rigs....ordered off the net all the gear but a bit stuck...

Got a bulk spool of 20lb mono for the reel and also a reel of 50lb shockleader.

For making you own rigs for the hooklength part do i use the 50lb line or use the 20lb??? or something completely different like coated line???

PS will be 2/3 hook flapper rigs...

Has a google search but soooo many different ways and advice

Use the 20lb for hooklength ,but make the main rig body with the heavier stuff ,if you are planning on making lots of rigs dont use proper shock leader line for making the rigs on ,just get a cheap bulk spool of 60lb mono should only be around 3 quid for 400 meters or so shock leader is that for 40 or 50 mtr ,also the usual advice is 10lb of leader for each ounce of lead so 6 ounce lead = 60lb leader, but I know your not a big caster at the minute so 50lb will surfice ,but I would suggest once you have used it get 60lb next time. :good:

I'm not a fan of mono, prefer a good braided line myself

Berkley Whiplash is my fave, 100lb as a leader onto a backing of 30lb then a steel trace on the front

Then again thats also what I use on my reel for pike and whatever else I may be fishing for as when you get it stuck in the reeds a simple yank will get it out without a risk of losing the lure, same for sea fishing ( go for synthetic bait not real stuff)

personally i use 35 lb amnesia for hook snoods, strong and dont tangle as much as thinner lines, especially on two or three hook rigs.if you google 2 hook clipped rig ,should come up with some pictures and info on how to make them.loads of good rigs about once you know how their done.main rigs i use are the pulley rig, drop down pulley, and 2 hook clipped .so many little ways to vary each trace to,like adusting length of hook snood to suit tide or fish your looking to catch. :good:

I use Red Ice for hook lengths. Its a 17lb mono. if you are going to catch bigger fish than that, then please tell me so i can come as well. Unless you are fishing in a heavy tide, then a 4 or 5 oz lead will be more than enough. Equal the lead weight to the leader you use for the rig body. (50lb is plenty.) Buy some ready made rigs, and try them. Once you find some u like, just copy them.

I like a stiff snood, 22-30lb preferably amnesia. 21 inch with a couple of 4/0 penelled on a single paternoster. Big squid with a a few worms bound on and whang it as far as you can. Dont normally catch anything over a couple of pounds which is frustrating but the day I do hook into a big Cod it will have Bobbys fridge written all over it!!

you may get away with a 4-5oz lead in the mersey etc , but on my and the ops part of the east coast you would be fishing on the beach again in about 5 mins for us 6-8 oz of grip lead is usually required to hold bottom.

Again also light hooklenghts are of little use as they get spun up and are difficult to untangle and become weak ,I personally use 30lb amnesia.

i used to use lighter line, but surprising what a smallish fish can do,ive had rays around 4/5 lb bite through 25lb line, congers will snap it like cotton, cod about 4/5 lb quite cabable of snapping it,and besides, the tangle factor of thin hook lengths is a nightmare. better bait presentation with 30/35 hook snoods, and good chance of landing the fish you hook, ive lost a fair few nice sizewd fish even on 35lb line due to biting through or snagging on sharp ledges when retreving,17lb wouldnt last 2 mins.
