shoplifting at 15 and 1 count of theft at 21 ish got a fine and a suspended sentence (i think)

i'm now in my mid forties and only had 1 speeding ticket since

Hi chilly, I think it will have more to do with how your standing is now, if you've not been in trouble since them you probablly want have any probs ,mate of mine had a bit of a tricky past shall we say but had no trouble getting one 15 years later even though when firearms officer turned up he had a file as thick as your arm, as others have said best thing is to honest. with them their not bad blokes. Cheers Dave.

They aren't going to be too worried about stuff that old mate but make absolutely sure you declare everything (cautions and convictions) on the form BEFORE you get it countersigned. If you have any doubt or can't remember exact dates or think you may have forgotten something relevant then apply for a criminal record disclosure at your local police station, it will only cost about £10.

If your still unsure, you might want to find out who you're FEO is and give him a call, say you want to apply but made silly mistakes 20+ years ago and don't want to waste anyones time etc. You'll be surprised at the response you get.

Good luck but based on what you've told us it sounds like you'll be fine.
