seb
Hi all I have a lightforce roof mounted light and I really want to install it on my defender. I don't mind cutting the hole in the roof but I have a full roof rack and I would need to extend the handle shaft so that the light is above the roof rack. I don't know if this is a stupid idea or not. Has anyone extended their roof lamp for this reason and what did it look like? A photo would be great. With the roof rack I cant get in most car parks with a height restriction anyway but the roof rack is too useful to take off. I don't like the idea of suction mounts and having my arm out the window on a cold night. Thanks Seb
Luckyshot
How far forward does your roofrack come and how high is it off the roof. The lamp on my defender sits pretty high already but could easy highten it within seconds if needed be to what ever height is rquired. seb
The roof rack is a full roof type that comes right to the front so I could have to come up between the frame. Slightly on the passenger side to clear the roof brace also. It is 12" high off the roof so I would need to make an extension 12" long so that I dont get the roofrack getting in the way and casting a shadow. Luckyshot
Once you have the handle fitted to your defender on the top is a threaded tube. You could always get some tube to your required length threaded at both ends and use a stud to connect it to the handle and screw the lamp on top as normal. Standard setup. Add the tube similar to below drawing. You would need to remove it when driving long distances due to wind issues but that only takes seconds. Grandalf
My landrover 90 is fitted with a Safari roof rack. Over driver's door I have attached a flat plate (5" x 5") - just two bolts fix plate to rack - and mounted the lamp to the plate as if it was the roof. Normal remote handle is just where you want it - outside the driver's window when mounted and just above the door for opening/closing. Power cable comes from dashboard cigar-lighter up and over sun shields and out through top of door at front. Flexible coiled cable just moulds into the rubber seal when the door is closed. When lamping trip is over - undo two bolts and store lamp in garage 'till next time. Been on truck a long time and works perfectly. Sorry I can't provide photograph - rack is off truck at the moment to save drag when on longer trips to go 'fowling. (Fuel saving). webber
All you need is some M10 threaded ros and 2 off M10 nuts to lock, and 1 off M10 extender nut. A decent fastener supplier should have them. webber

Grandalf
Fuel saving on a defender, Never Maybe not but the Memsahib thinks it does and that's what matters! It certainly goes faster - Got it up to 70 the other morning (Tail wind of course).
seb
Thanks for all the advice. I have been down my workshop and made up an extension. I like the idea of being able to remove it so I have made it so that it unscrews at the bottom and has a quick connection for the wires. The threads on it were M10. I just hope it is not too high but hopefully it will do what it is supposed to do.
Luckyshot
Very smart think it may need cutting down a tad
seb
Very smart think it may need cutting down a tad The extension is 12" To the top of the roof rack from the roof is 12" so I need it this long enough to clear the rack. I just don't know if it is going to look silly. I suppose I can fit it and shorten it after.
Luckyshot
Hidden behind the roof rack it should look ok but so long as it works who cares what it looks like Edited December 31, 2011 by Luckyshot
