coyotemaster
Being in need of something a little more than the .22 rim fire and a little less than full house .223 loads, I have been perusing the net hopeful of a safe reduced load. I have a lot of Blue Dot but it isn't highly recomended by it's maker for reduced centerfire loads. There is a powder marketed by Accurate Arms namely #5744 that is supposed to be designed by maker for reduced loads and loads in older large cap cases. There are several recipes available usually running 15-17 grains with a 40 vmax to equal the Hornet and the site quotes loads as low as 12 gr. for .22 rimfire velocities. The powder is said to be pretty insensitive to temp and position, rendering it less likely to suffer problems associated with other powders in small cases. At 15 gr. the danger of a double charge is negated as the cap. on a .223 is around 28 gr. I will be trying some soon on the coon population and hopefully with good result. I have in the past been very reluctant to try reduced loads but these are considered safe by enlightened authorities.

phaedra1106
4g of Trailboss with a 55gr FMJ will give a reduced load at about 1070fps, 3.1 of Titegroup will give about 1060fps at 4000cup pressure. Both those loads are from the Hodgdon website so proven and safe, I use Trailboss in .308 sub-sonic loads. Trailboss will fill the case nicely as it's a very large fluffy donut shaped powder, Titegroup is not position sensitive and double based. I am trying to get the velocity in the 2500fps range as I need to kill them instantly yet not destroy the hide. I have had several get away using the rim fire and several with big holes with .223 full house loads. I am still looking hard at my .17 centerfire and the 20 vmaxs I have in the drawer. I am sure the vmax will work fine, I need to find a safe charge to get my velocity in the area of an HMR for the coons and still have the Predator loads for coyotes in the same outing. Any suggestions?

Underdog
The bluedot will work, it's just that it does not give much warning as to when it's getting hot! 1/4grn increases are mandatory! A base figure I don't know(Yet). I have done pretty good with H4227 in cases fro 243 up to 308. 16-18grn. About the double dosing, just make a stick up with a mark on it and drop in your charged cases before loading the bullets. U.
Underdog
Scroll down to find the 223 loads.
