foxnet22 Posted January 8, 2012 Report Share Posted January 8, 2012 most of the lads have raisede beds on theses gardens but for me im doing it due to a back injury so its easy for me to maintain.plus i dont thin the soil to good so will be filling with top soil and manure and take it from there mate. You are right - you can put your own mix of compost, manure etc into raised beds. Weeds are much easier control as are pests like slugs. In addition and if you are plagued, with carrot fly, the pesky things cannot get to the height of raised beds! Plus as someone else has said, they do look very smart. Good luck and watch your back! Ricko Posted January 8, 2012 Report Share Posted January 8, 2012 Smaller raised beds are easier to manage in terms of planting, weeding, harvesting. The only reason that I haven't done it is that I am going in for large scale production and have created large beds (30ftx9ft) to grow lots of the basic veg (spuds, carrots, onions etc). In the past I have used raised beds, and as other members have said, it allows you to create a depth of decent soil quite quickly. Does your allotment have a society?
