Matt Gould
everning people, just a quick question just looks at te choke in my winchester sx3 and the current choke in it was what i thought was open. my choke guage agrees too but looking at the sx3 manual apparently the choke what i thought was open is attuley half (3 notches) you tell what size chokes is in your whinchester by the amount of notches on top of the choke. can any body help me becasue i am not not sure wethere i have got a quater or a open in my gun, i realy what a quatewr in the barrel, only reason i have a open is becasue it was sold to me with it in. HDAV
Not weird, choke gauge is useless (unless it has been made for your barrel) there is a big thread on chokes running the marking is an indication of constriction there is no formal standard for the markings AFAIK just what each manufacturer chooses to use Have a read http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/192927-chokes/page__view__findpost__p__1643030__fromsearch__1 nominal bore is .729" some are more some slightly less and some chokes are made to differing constrictions. The question is why does it matter? Edited January 10, 2012 by HDAV

Schern
It should say on the choke what it is. If you take it out it'll be written on the side. Clearer than the notches IMO.
njc110381
Notches are clear even when the tube is dirty. On all the guns I've ever known 5 notches is cyl and 1 notch is full. All the ones in between are pretty simple to figure out. Edited January 11, 2012 by njc110381

All the ones in between are pretty simple to figure out. Correct me if im wrong, but isnt 5 notches on some guns Skeet. Some cyl cokes have no notches at all. Had a look in the Browning Maxus manual and this was how it looked: I - Full II - Imp. Modified III - Modified IIII - Imp. Cylinder IIIII - Skeet No Notches - Cylinder
bang bang birdy
sx3 should come with three chokes when purchased new. mine came with 1 full (1 notch) and 2 quarter (4 notch). thats what i found in the box when i got home. quick call to my gun shop and they gave me the half choke (3 notch). now i have two quarter chokes for my sx3, not very useful with a semiauto, but i guess its a spare
