Nice one.

hendersons
Wonderful video, seems a bit of a shame to spoil it with the shot of that massive blue and White pig sty at the beginning. The don is a much under fished river through from hilsborough right the way out to meadow hell. Ive caught some cracking fish out of it from grayling to double figure barbel. Have you tried in the river loxley? I used to fish in there all the time as a kid. My record for one day just trotting a maggot in any likely looking spot between the weir at the Robin hood end and rowel lane was 63x brown trout,19x grayling and 1 perch. Nick Thanks Nick, Yes, I've fished the Loxley, and the Rivelin. Both are as you say, stuffed full of trout and grayling and only lightly fished. The Don goes well beyond Meadowhell though, right past the prison at Donny and all the way down there are barbel that would shake of not beat the Yorkshire record. And 99% of the Don and its tributaries are free to fish.
hendersons
I was brought up in stannington so every night after school I used to go fishing in the loxley. During the weekend I either fished damn flask if my dad would give me a lift or go to rivelin if he wouldn't.. I remember being the only one fishing most of the time. The damns at rivelin were superb, some of the finest still water roach fishing I've ever experienced. If I didn't catch at least one 2lb roach a month I was disappointed. The don came later in my life when I started work and had transport. I used to work split shifts at the royal Victoria hotel so most afternoons I used to wet a line down the wicker. It was a bit Rough down there and you had to be a bit careful of used needles but the fishing was superb. Nick
UKPoacher
Fortunately I'm not a Dee-Dah but I spent a bit of my career in Police Dog Training at Niagara. It was while I was there that I discovered the Don. Unfortunately my fly rods & waders are packed away awaiting the removal men, but I kept a float rod and centrepin back to keep me amused. Must have been pretty tough for you growing up in Stannington and not following the Owls I must admit that several times while covering matches at Hillsborough I was tempted to spend the hiatus betwwen fans fighting as they went to the match and fans fighting when they came out, to chuck some fluff at the grayling. It wouldn't have gone down well with Silver Command though:- "Charlie Golf Nine Five what is your current location and commitment - over?" "Up to my knackers in the Don and I've just spotted a rise - over."
hendersons
It was a little difficult at times being a blade in s6. All the way through school there was only ever 2 of us who were united fans. So as you can imagine we took quite a ribbing. My whole family are Wednesday fans too. The worst thing was having to get the bus on match day in a united shirt I used to get funny looks from people when going through hilsborough. I did go to a few Wednesday games with a friend of mine but the people there never seemed as friendly towards us youngsters as they did at bramall lane. I remember once at united a few of the hooligans were having a shout and a swear at a player that used to play for united and an old dear told them off for swearing infront of us kids. She then winked at us and gave us a humbug each. You have just caused my workmates much hilarity with the end of your post. I've also had to spend twenty minutes trying to explain what a dee- dah is (including using my best sheffield accent) but I think they get it now. A very amusing post sir. I've never fished on the don with a fly I'm assuming you use a team of wets or a black gnat on the top? I should be coming home for a couple of days in the next few weeks so I think I shall have to have a go. By coincidence I've just bought myself a nice little four weight rod that should be ideal. UKPoacher
Apparently you can use any fly you like as long as it is pink! Or so two old boys told me this week. You'll need waders to make the most of it and it doesn't fish very well when coloured. There is also a good stretch bordering the police sports ground accessed from the opposite bank from Whin Gardens. Hope that you get to enjoy it. BTW; I have a video somewhere of my dog taking on some United supporters in a pub in Rotherham. They were overwhelming a police support unit until Jet became involved. He absolutley mauled them. It took exactly 1.5 seconds to get them all back inside the pub :yp:
hendersons
Pink eh! I'll have to dig the zonkers out. I once got told by an old guy down rivelin that the best thing for trout is to prebait with brown crumb for a week before you fish. God knows what I did to the water quality of that river for a few months. If only I knew then what I know now. 1.5 seconds are you sure nobody at the bar shouted it's my round. Seriously the power of a large dog has always amazed me. I often wonder why the police don't use more on match days and less of the mounted police. I know which one i would be more afraid of. My father now lives over looking rivelin near hagg hill. Until recently he had a german Shepard even though she was as soft as a brush (unless you turned up at the house wearing a motorbike helmet for some reason) his house is the only one on his end of the street that hasn't been burgled. I told him he should get another but he says he can't live with the upset when they die. The last one was like his trailer she followed him everywhere. UKPoacher
Zonkers would be a good bet - in April. Look what turned up the other day Got to make 4lbs later on in the year? I'm afraid the good old days of using dogs to deal with public order has all but gone. Too many chiefs with no experience of angry men and a fear of corporate liability. A few years ago the respective Sheffield hooligans turned every Saturday into street battles. Eventually, after a derby game, one inspector decided that enough was enough. We coralled the trouble makers in the Sportsman and basically kicked the bejaesus out of them. My job was to guard the outside of the pub to make sure nobody got in to witness the retribution. Those leaving the pub could barely walk. It settled the situation down for a couple of years. Horses, like commnity constables, are totally useless, but can't be got rid of becuase of the adverse public reaction. Losing a dog is very hard, but the pleasure from the next one is more than worth it. We said that we wern't having any more dogs once my old police dog died, but I wouldn't be without our current one.
hendersons
That's a cracking fish! Easy 4lb later in the year. I'm looking forward to my next trip home now. I heard about the incident in the sportsman. I remember a couple of derby days that ended in running battles on west street and division street. It's quite amazing (in a bad way) when it all goes off. What are generally normal guys during the day turning into complete animals once they've had a few and been to a football match . I seem to remember a similar incident to the one you describe in the Freemasons pub on the bridge in Hillsborough when Graham Pugh used to have it. I can't vouch as to how true that is as I just heard rumours. I hear that it's starting to get quite bad again this season but I suppose that was always going to happen with both teams being in the same division.fortunately for me I get to see very little of it now as I only get to see a couple of away games a season now. As I'm so far away I just choose a couple of games that are close to me. Only once in the last few years have I heard the dreaded chant of BBC, and on that occasion I made myself scarce pretty quick.' UKPoacher
Yes, and the thing that never ceases to amaze me is that the instigators are often white collar workers including accountants and solicitors. In my opinion the problem will continue whilever they make the clubs responsible for their fans. That is totally unfair and is unique to football and public houses. There are ways these days of identifying, targeting and tracking suspects. The problem is that it relies on that old oxymoron; police intelligence. I didn't see anything in twenty five years to suggest that the police have the capability to do anything except nibble round the edges of the problem and occssionally reap some personal grief out. Hope that you enjoy your return to the Don. If you are fly-fishing I'd suggest starting below Hillsborough College and working up to Trebor Bassetts. Don't neglect that drystone wall bordering the college either Best of luck.
