New land, dunno where to turn next tho

Moved from my farm in devon up to University of Surrey and have now ust found a small amount of land to shoot on only about 1.5 acres loads of rabbits however which the grass is ment for the horses, which means i cant bring my shotguns or .22 rimfire up here at all.

So the next logical step i thought of was to buy a good air rifle, i own a BSA supersport at the mo but was thinking about upgrading to a pre-charge air rifle.

so the kinda questions im asking is: What sort of price im i looking at for a complete kit, rifle, bottle, ect..??

and do pre-charge rifles go wrong alot of the time? i dont really want to be replacing seals and stuff every other week

Any help would be much appreciated,

cheers, Tim

do you know if the land has been shot on before? I have about 3 acres i shoot on and i use a crosman ratcatcher, bought secondhand, it cost me less than £30. It is incredibly accurate, and i love it! you dont need a PCP really, CO2 are very good and very underrated they have all the qualities of a PCP without he charging equipment and very high price tag. They really are very good, i might be getting a rabbitstopper soon aswell as i like my ratty so much!

Tbh look on the net, go somewhere like airgunbuyer and look at their current deals. Anything that is above about £100 and rated to "full power" will be quite adequate, .22 or .177 . Also look at any secondhand deals going on, and if you are still stuck google for reviews on any rifles on offer to see what others think of them. Works for me

nope, hasnt been shot on b4, which means you can walk up to some of them within about 20yrds

How long does the C02 bottles last? and do they cost much to replace?

If you have the 12g cartridges they usually last for around 30 in cold weather and up to 60 in warm weather, the cartridges cost about 60p each.

Hi,

I wouldn't reccomend co2 for hunting. The power can fluctuate greatly in different heat and co2 guns are not as powerful as spring guns or a PCP. PCP's are very reliable and I have never had anything go wrong on my AA S410k in .22. ???

FM :(

CO2 guns are steady on power i have never had anything go wrong in my ratcatcher :good: , and a S410 would cost about 800-1000 pounds with all the equipment, not enough advantages (if any) to spend out an extra 770 pounds im afraid.

Hi,

An S410 will not cost £800 - £1000 with equipment new. You could get it even cheaper second hand and buy a second hand pump to charge it. :good: A ratcatcher puts out 2/3 of the power of a full power PCP on a good day and it's maximum range will be 15 yards. :( I will try and find you some links to some reasonably priced PCP's such as a S410 or S200 etc. ???

The furthest rabbit i have ever shot is about 20 yards and it went down with a head shot without a flinch, mine i think has been tweaked and is putting out about 10ft/lbs

Hi,

Here is the uttings website. HERE They are not the cheapest but will give you a rough idea of pricing for example an S410 from them with an AGS scope and mounts will cost £480. Then you could buy a charging bottle from them for £139. Alternatively you could buy a stirrup pump for around £120 new or a second hand one for around £80 to charge it. :good: Allow another £50 for a moderator and decent gunbag and you have a very decent PCP setup. ???

FM

P.S I'm bias about the S410's. I have one and it's the best. :(:blush: There are other equally good guns at a cheaper price such as others air arms like the S200 or other makes like falcon, brocock, BSA etc.

20 yards i **** further than that :(

Ratcatchers in my experience are good for what the name suggests close range work on rats. As for air arms not worth the extra money i have to disagree there worth every penny and will beat a ratcatcher hands down every time. £2 for a refill on a divers bottle wich then gives you around 6 refills which then gives you about 70 shots per refill. I can certainly see some advnatages. Its like reccomending a pea shooter over a black widow

Don't think anyones disputing that, just not worth that much extra money. Especially considering the shooting this guy is going to be doing - 1.5 acres. I've got a theoben with gasram, i've had no problems with it. was about £250 second hand including scope.

cheers,will

I take most rabbits at 10 yards through my excellent stalking skills :(

Oh and black widows are illeagal, i know someone who was caught using one by the police and was fined £2000 he was only using it for target aswell!

Hi,

They are not illiegal. Do a quick google search and you will see many places in Britain sell them. Was your mate using against illiegal targets in a place which he is not allowed to use it? because they are perfectly legal and I have one. ???

FM :(

P.S I know he could go down other power sources but he enquired about PCP's so I told him about those. :good:

Funny how their for sale in my local fishing shop and at most gamefairs i go to. Fair play to you it take skill to get within ten yards of a rabbit. But then very little skill to hit it at that range. But fair play to you if you want to use a rat catcher on bunnies at that range :good:

p.s Did these rabbits have puffed up eyes? ???

Cheers FM you've been a grand help :good: ,

i realise i only have a small patch of land up here at the mo, but i have never seen such a density of rabbits in one place!!!

a nice pcp would be also good back on my 200 acre farm, for roost shooting in our woods where i dont want to be using a shotgun.

i have looked into the C02 options and i dont think they will produce the power that i need, i think the name ratcatcher gives it away abit, its an idea gun for rats but i dont want to be taking pigeons and rabbits with it at 30yrds!

just found a guy selling a Webley FX2000 which im looking into ??? see how it goes

cheers for all the responses! Tim

The old saying goes: .177 for feather .22 for fur. Both calibres are good. Though .177 has a flatter trajectory than the .22 therefore making it more forgiving when judging ranges. As long as you hit your target in the vital area it will go down :good:

Good luck with your choice

I've just got my 1st PCP. Seen it advertized on airgunbbs. AA s310, scope, bottle, adapter, silencer, tin of pellets, gunbag, knock down duck all for 425. Complete kit. Keep your eyes open and you'll find a deal. Also check out your local Loot and free ad papers.
