Anthony.D
Hello All, Can anyone give me some advice. I've got a Berreta o/u approx 20 years old. the barrels are only joined at the breech? and the muzzle. Yesterday I fell and banged the barrels on a moss covered rock (gun empty). On examination for damage I noticed that there was a little break in the weld/solder at the muzzle join. No dents, or damage to barrels, chokes unscrew fine, I only fired 4 shots after that. When I got home I noticed the failure in the weld had got worse in length. Obviously I don't want to use it until it has been professionally looked at. Has anyone had similar problems in the past. Will I end up having to send it back to Berreta. Will it need re-proofing. It's worth about £400-£500. I certainly don't want to sell it to anyone not knowing about this damage. Catweazle
I'm not a gunsmith, but I'll be very surprised if it is actually a weld. More likely to be silver soldered in which case a gunsmith will be able to repair it quite easily.
Hector Vector
A decent gunsmith will be able to re-lay the rib quite easily. Hopefully there's nothing nasty going on underneath it which may have caused it to spring in the first place. It won't need to go through proof. I had one of my side-by-sides done a while ago - all three ribs removed and relayed and a bit of re-blacking, cost around £280. That was going a bit yucky under the top rib, but luckily not terminal!!! English guns are normally soft soldered, not sure about all European stuff though. I've got a couple of AYA's that have brazed ribs. Even so it's repairable; just need to find youself a proper gunsmith...
welshwarrior
It should not be to expensive to fix as other have said normally only solder or brazed on. But I'm no gun smith I always send mine to Dennis at uk gun repairs now he is spot on and well priced for great work.
Anthony.D
Thanks for help. It's not the rib coming away though, its the weld/solder holding the barrels together!
welshwarrior
Thats why I send to someone who knows I like Uk Gun Repairs as they still make guns and have lots and lots of experience in repairing them.
