NeVeTaS
I want to decoy over some rape, the crop is about 10cm high allready. Should I just rest my shells ontop of the crop. I guess the pigeons won't notice until they start coming down, and realise sea level has got quite abit higher By then it would be to late? Would that work?
ernyha
NVT,being an ancient codger i think 10cm is about 4" and if this is the case putting your deacs. on the crop will be O.K. myself I always put them on a set of cradles whatever the height of the crop and adjust the height so that they are prominent. The beauty of cradles is that as you shoot birds they can be put on in place of your plastics.Cradles are not particularly cheap but I have had 10 for 6 years or more and have found that if looked after they more than pay for themselves and are still as good as new. AndyCM
.....or just use oversize sticks to get the deeks visible above the crop. Bamboo sticks from the garden centre are ideal, cut to size with a hack saw.
Elma Fud
When you are out and about, keep an eye open for old disgarded fence wire. Not high tensile, it's too thin and tends to bend over easily. I believe 8 guage is better because its thicker. It can be cut to different lengths, thus allowing your birds to be seen whatever the height of the crop. 1. Make a bend about 5 cms from the end of the wire.(head) 2. wrap the wire around a small paint tin.(circle, should be small enough to hold the bird without falling through). By using a small tin all your cradles will fit snug together and will be easy to carry. 3. the length of the cradle is up to you. Good Luck. Cranfield
I like my decoys to be clearly above the crop, even when its 2-3ft tall. Its also recommended to try to gets some movement into some of your decoys. The wind will do this if the decoy is on a spring peg, or a springy flat wire peg. There are also "floaters" thast you can mount a dead bird or foam decoy on that move in the slightest breeze. Elma, thanks for the great suggestion on the wire cradles. rabbitstopper
Theyare loving some of the set aside fields, also there seems to be loads on the recently ploughed and rolled potato fields, but in this weather they seem to fly off and and never want to come back, and seems very little pigeons flying James
