Thunderbird
I've been scoring reasonably well (for me) recently using 7.5s in my current favourite cartridge (Gamebore SuperGem) but the next lot coming were only available in size 8 (fibre wad). I've just won B Class for 2011 at the local English Sporting Gun club and am shooting between 75-87% at the moment. Am I going to notice any difference when I switch on to the 8s? Salop Matt
I bet most folk cant tell the difference between 1 size difference of shot in 28gram loads esp a half size !
EdSolomons
absolutely none! Good shooting and enjoy!
Thunderbird
I did think that would be the case, cheers. Is there a discipline where 8s are specifically used at all?
EdSolomons
all rounder used for sporting mainly but I have shot them in first barrell on the rare times I shoot trap, and at pigeons at times. I would be happy shooting them on all but the long rabbits at sporting.
shaun4860
Use them but dont start thinking about the fact that they are 8's or you will blame them if you miss As Ed says there is no difference

The main defference between the two is 0.5 if that's any help More seriously, I swap between 7.5 and 8's fairly often but that's mainly down to what's available at the time. I use Hull Sovereign and can feel a slight difference (I'm not sure if it's in my mind though ) between the two, however I don't notice any change in my scores, and I am shooting around the same average as you. Thunderbird
Thanks, I spoke to a few people at the shoot yesterday who interchange between the two according to what's cheapest. I managed to get the plastic wads in 7.5 it's just the fibre that were unavailable in 8s. The plaswad supergems are a really nice smooth cartridge. Sandbank
'Nominally' 28g cartridges contain 350 pellets 7½ and 410 pellets 8 shot. The mass per pellet will vary in the same ratio. To concur with previous posts, I doubt the approximately 15% difference is readily detectable. Though, I guess, a few extra pellets is a good trade off for slightly less mass per pellet for clays. Thunderbird
Weren't the averages out a couple months back? Ah, This is my club not the CPSA, but they use the same criteria I think. I'm not actually in the CPSA. Congratulations on the advancement. Goes to show, the man behind the gun is more important than the cartridge!! Let's hope so!!
0145wirbelwind
If you are shooting plastic wad and us plastic all the time , then good luck with the fibre . I hate fibre with a passion. It paturns bad and kicks more. As for the shot size you will not see to much change beween a 7.5 and an
rapid basher
can anybody tell me the diffrince is between fiba and plastic wads (upside and downsides that is)as im new to the shotgun seen
COACH
Don't worry about the difference as its so small even the average A class shot won't know the difference in kills. How ever the plastic leaves a right mess but the fibre doesn't. Therefore you can use the fibre anywhere but the plastic can only be used at certain shooting grounds. No one should use plastic in the fields as it makes an eternal mess and the farmer will soon give you a good bollo***** and you could easily loose your permission to shoot. Emmsy
from my experience the difference between a fibre and plaswad is about 1 choke size. full in a fibre is about the same as 3/4 in a plastic. the other downside is fibres generally kick more. Yes would agree with that. A plastic wad holds the shot together for a bit longer on exit from the barrel. Initially I felt fibre cartridges 'lacked the punch' of plastic but having very recently compared Eley Blues fibre vs. plastic, given the one choke size adjustment I cannot tell any difference. Mind you, I am a very long way from shooting AA! P.S. I know this has drifted slightly 'off topic' from the shot size issue but felt it worthwhile to confirm earlier posts. Thunderbird
Indeed it is. I'm looking forward to using the 8s. What I'm not looking forward to is having bitten off more than I can chew!
Simon123
Doubt that you'll be able to notice any difference mate
