hedd-wyn
Evening gents Had a lengthy discussion with my FLO the other day about obtaining my FAC. An empty packet of Jafa Cakes later, we both came to the conclusion that the 17HMR would be the best option after discussing the terrain, and the type of quarry/animal I would be shooting on my permission. Was wondering which animal would you deem acceptable to shoot with a 17HMR? I realise that everyone have different views on this, and that some areas have different rules. I'm looking for opinions here chaps, not advice. I have already been given clear advice the FLO. Cheers HW31

Cheers HW31 this will open a huge debate in my opinion the 17 HMR is a great long range rabbit gun and a sub 100 yard fox caliber if you have been given "clear" advice by your FLO why ask on here Edited February 8, 2012 by Ackley

hedd-wyn
if you have been given "clear" advice by your FLO why ask on here Like I said, I just wanted other people's opinions. I personally will be using it for rabbits only, just incase people think I'm coward for throwing an open question and running
kent
Rabbits and Hares, not the best on crows (had quite a few issues but shot a lot of them ) premature break up and lack of terminal effect generally. NOT a replacemnt for the .22 LR at sub 75 yds rabbits but a good 100yds and over rabbit gun depending mainly on users ability. Personally i dont view it as a fox gun especially with the unpredictable terminals hadn't got it conditioned and wouldn't ask- shot a few hundred hares with it and took a personal view on Balance BTW Forget the "non ricochet BS" it will and they are far from uncommon if you dont take care, especially if your new to the game of rifles
Gimlet
Agree with all of the above. Its a rabbit gun, pure and simple. Pin accurate to 150/160 yds, a doddle to shoot and not too noisey. But 250 ft/lb is not a heavy punch. It'll take a fox below 100 yds on the off chance, but if you're out hunting them with a lamp take something else. My ticket lists fox against my HMR, but thats not the norm; a lot of FEOs are very dubious. If in doubt don't mention the 'F' word or ask for .22 CF. leeds chimp
just a 17HMR? expensive to feed unless you get a 22lr as well
Beardo
same price as a shotgun to feed
pat g
HMR, a great long range bunny rifle, useful on long range corvids but a dedicated foxing rifle it is not and never will be . Maybe the occasional fox you happen to come across when out in the fields and within sensible range 100 yards absolute maximum and preferably less. A lovely sweet, flat shooting calibre it is though, but you know i still prefer to use my 22lr for shooting bunnies under the lamp ATB, Pat Edited February 8, 2012 by pat g
