louis123
Ive got a little problem i just need some help with if you wouldnt mind. The story: For christmas 2010 i was bough 12 clay shooting lessons with Mike Reynolds of Mid-Norfolk Shooting School. Throughout 2010 i had all of these lessons and got to a reasonable standard, however when i finished this lessons i was too bogged down with work and couldnt afford my own gun at the time so i havent fired a single shot since my last lesson which was about october 2010. However now the time has come for me to obtain my SGC as were now moving house where i will have to opportunity to shoot, but im scared i wont remember a single thing and dont want to fall into bad practices although i can remember most of what i was taught. What would you suggest the best solution would be? I was thinking of once being granted my SGC i could just have a refresher lesson or two and practice betweeen them with my own gun at home, pigeons, rabbits ect. Do you think this would be a good idea, baring in mind lessons are quite expensive! Cheers, Louis
Coolhead
Can you buy a trap and practice on that? It's more humane than working your skills up by possibly injuring animals.
tomhw100
As long as you are SAFE it doesn't matter whether you can hit a target or not....that comes later firstly and foremostly as long as you are safe you will be fine-Ive never had lessons and I'm sure alot of people on pigeon watch haven't either and I think I'm at least a good shot and at best a great shot . But by all means if you feel the need for lessons go and have one or two,to get you back into the swing of things or even better spend a day at a clay ground and youll get used to your gun in no time...practice,,practice practice and the rest comes naturally...just remember safety first! Just don't practice on live quarry if you feel your marksman ship isn't up to it be humane and treat animals with respect to and you won't go far wrong! Good luck Tom Edited February 12, 2012 by tomhw100
bedwards1966
If you can go to a local clay ground that might be a good option, it'll give you chance to practise and get reasonable before shooting quarry. You can have a single trap in a field but a clay ground is much, much better. Also at a clay ground people will probably point out faults you have/bad habits as you shoot and give you some general advice as you get better. stevo_m
Yikes 12 lessons with Mike.....that's an expensive present you got!! I would go and have a play on some clays, if your hitting then all is well, if not perhaps a refresher lesson then get back on the clays again, when your hitting go for the live stuff. That's what I would do anyway. Sounds like your in Norfolk, why not come along to one of "Hitclays" clay shoots at Beeston (Nr Dereham) next shoot is next Sunday. Good day out with excellent targets and good banter with that! If you PM him he can lend guns too. Steve PS Not to put Mike down but there are some much better and cheaper instructors out there, don't get me wrong Mike is good, however I had 3 lessons when I started, he was the most expensive (by a long way), I got 40 mins off him (paid for 60mins) and I felt cheated. Used someone else and learnt loads more from him.
HDAV
Go have few lessons and make sure you still enjoy it. Don't rush to buy a gun and as it takes a while to get SGC you'll have time for some lessons
casts_by_fly
Once you've moved house and have your new address, apply for your SGC. You don't have to buy the gun then if you don't want to but at least get the certificate so you have the option. Then you can go to clay grounds and hire a gun or find a friend and borrow a gun. Also, if you want a refresher lesson then great. But don't forget to check the meet up boards on here. plenty of good shots around. thanks rick
