Ferret Master
You missed and the noise of the pellet whizzing through the grass made the rabbit duck. It could also be argued that you are shooting at the rabbits too far away anyway. FM

PWD
I shot a rabbit once years ago..the air rifle a Webley Tracker...just duffed at that exact moment and the pellet bounced off it.....but just in case it was a mega tough killer rabbit I ran away ...maybe this rabbit now 25 years old is doing the rounds with super honed skills
Hamster
Hell Hamster I nearly wet myself reading your quote funniest thing i read in ages We aim to please. On a serious note though I recall years and years ago this subject being raised in Airgun World and if memory serves the writer was convinced this was reason enough to avoid long range shots with .22  . I have to admit the same thing has happened to me and it certainly looks for all the world as though the rabbit reacts to the sound  but it surely cannot be the case as others have mentioned, at best the sound from the gun and the pellet striking must be insanely close. PWD
There will be variables as the OP never mention what pellet/power ratio he had but based on a standard 11.5ftlb air rifle the pellet would take about twice as long to reach bunnies head as the sound..I think the rough difference is holding a pen two inches from your desk and dropping it (time taken for the sound to reach rabbit) and holding it three and a half inches from your desk and dropping it..(time taken for the pellet to get there)...the timing difference between the two would be holding it one and a half inch high . Very short windows for any reaction even if the rabbit was aware of whats going on. I reckon the pellet dropped short and he may have seen some debris thrown over its head by the pellet hitting the grass. We sometimes hear pigeon shooters say they dodged the pellets from shot...but I thing all that's happened is they have missed Edited February 17, 2012 by PWD
Guest
It's more likely that they reacted to the sound which travels at about twice the speed of a .22 pellet. At 30 yards they have about 0.08 seconds to react and at 40 yards 0.1 seconds. Rabbit reaction time is probably quicker than humans which is about 0.1s, so it's possible that the rabbits are flinching from the sound. I would not like your chance of a clean kill at that range. 25 to 30 yard is more like it Edited February 28, 2012 by 0145wirbelwind
