Fisherman Mike
Question for the Air rifle Buffs. I have an early HW 80 in poor condition which I have stripped and am in the process of restoring. The end of the 500mm barrel is slightly damaged and I wanted to reduce it by about 75mm and fit a combined cocking aid/silencer. This may be a stupid Question but Can I do this myself in a vice with a hack saw and finishing with a file without adversely affecting the rifling and accuracy of the barrel. Or should I entrust it to a gunsmith.? Im reasonably confident and have bench saw I can fit with a steel cutting blade to cut it parallel. Thanks. secretagentmole
Take it to a proper gunsmith, after shortening it you will need it recrowning, so get it done properly! After he has shortened the barrel you can then get it screw cut so you have a UNF silencer thread ready for the silencer/cocking aid! FalconFN
You can do it yourself, but the cut end will need to be protected so that it dosen't rust. Also having a shorter barrel will reduce the power of the rifle - not by much, but it's worth knowing before you start. Good luck, the HW80 is a superb rifle and will be great to use once you've restored it.
andy198712
you say not by much... i have a rabbitstopper barrel on my ratty (24in?) and its makes a footpound more then standard one did....
Catweazle
You can cut it yourself, use an engineers square to keep it square, finish by re-cutting the crown using the ball-bearing method ( see thread below ) http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/195785-running-in-a-new-air-rifle/page__p__1672772__hl__crown__fromsearch__1#entry1672772
richard1951
ballbearing is the perfect way but you need a lathe to do it or you can use a ball grindstone on a dremal but it only needs a small bevel to break the sharp end.
