Daveo26
Iv bought a disco off here with a 300 TDI. Last night it chewed up the alternator belt, Fitted another today, same part number so i thinks its the right one, It runs for a couple of minutes then the belt lifts off the waterpump pulley and curls over on itself, like its trying to work its way off. It only does it here on the water pump pulley. I removed belt and tried it the other way round, same result. I have removed the belt and spun the W/P pulley it is slightly and i mean only just running out. Like your bmx wheel used as a kid. Could this be the problem? any advice please
rabbiter
i dont think it would take much slack for the belt to jump off mate, check the tensioners mate. DAZ

Chr15j
Try tightening the prop shaft bolt, had same issue as you but only found out too late!
FarmerSim
When my 300TDi started faffing like this it was the tensioner bearings that had gone, the tension kept them quiet, but you could watch it wobble and start the belt wandering. When i took it off, it was obvious that the bearings were, er, not very well - a new one cured it. Yours may have another problem, but worth a good look... deny essex
Mine started to do that , turned out it was the water pump bearing collapsing and adding tilt to the water pump pulley.
Daveo26
Im thinking it may well be the waterpump, Was there any other signs other than the beslt running off?
Luckyshot
A new water pump only costs £20 and is very easy to change.

mrwabbits
Could be right to go with a water pump check and change. Have you tried the "Penny Trick " ?? For those with a squelling belt even after renewing the damper/tensioner unit/bearing , try the 9 o`clock penny trick. Slacken off the single stud nut on tensioner , tease it forwards slightly with a good screwdriver/prybar, Place a 1p coin at the 9 o`clock position between tensioner body and engine case, hold penny in place and retighten stud nut. Hey presto, no more squeek I know , it worked on mine
