Fieldsports tv 'wild boar hunting' ????

I have just finished watching this weeks Fieldsports tv which has a link via this site and youtube. The programme featured a 'wild boar hunt' and the presenter and headlines suggested that this was indeed a hunt for wild boar.

Having watched the piece I was dismayed that the main freely accessable channel in the uk solely aimed at the shooting fraternity would broadcast such drivvel.

The hunt was infact two men sat in a makeshift hide in front of a pile of feed put down for a small group of 'ferral' pigs not wild boar at all.

I have hunted wild boar on the continent and dread to think what any hunter from mainland europe makes of this 'British wild boar hunt'.

I remember watching a tv programme some years ago where an American 'hunter' was shown sitting in a similar hide as the one above, waiting for a 'big cat' to arrive at a carcase which had been left for it, before shooting it from close range.

I thought then and now that this depicts the shooting/hunting community in a poor light as what was dipicted was neither hunting, sporting nor a good example of what countrysports are about.

If there is a pest control issue then the animals have to be controlled but to promote this as hunting does us all a disfavour. I expect this kind of coverage from the mainstream tv channels, but not from one run by and for shooting folk.

If you think we do not sit over baited areas to shoot boar here in europe then I am sorry we do. It is common, and a good way to get the boar into a shootable position. It is not all driven boar you know. As much fun as that is it only works at certain times of the year, and boar need controlling all year long.

As I said there is a need to control boar or ferral pigs. But the article suggests that the pigs were wild boar and that it was a hunt. I would argue that both were inaccutate. Anyone viewing the programme with no knowledge of fieldsports in general and wild boar in particular would be sadly mislead as to what was being depicted.

so are you saying these aren't escaped UK wild boar?

From what I saw they were genetically tested as wild boar and living wild in an area that has a reasonable number. My brother was out down that way after one last week and he also say a couple of light coloured ones in a litter of more normal dark piggies.

You could use the same argument about sitting in a highseat and shooting deer many of which could also be loosely described as feral being offspring of deer park escapees, or even decoying pigeons many of which would also be feral.

I veiwed this as pest control and apart from the presenter giving it the big build up didn't see or hear anything that would give me cause to see it as anything else, and certainly for pest control the most effective method of despatch available has to be the method of choice.

Re-read line 3 of my post about the presenter giving it the big build up!!.

When I say I'm going fox hunting I am in no way implying that I'm going to jump on a horse and ride out with a pack of hounds or me going for a couple of partridge/pheasant (in season) from one of my shoots doesn't mean I'm going to have to take along a line of beaters and pickers up etc .

I wasn't trying to have a dig fella there has been many a post on here (and will be) that I don't totally agree with or I personally find wrong or at fault, there have been many posts (and will be) that the anti brigade could have a field day with. I'm not going to jump on their bandwagon by condemning things which just don't sit right with me.

So.... what you are saying is that shooting sports shouldn't be presented with any intimation that they are fun or exciting?

You also haven't properly read my post(s) I'm totally backing Fieldsports TV and the way that particular feature was portrayed. It IS the presenters job to give it the big build up fella.

Mike..

Edited to add: I have re-read my posts with a veiw to changing them if they appear to give the message that I'm opposed to that particular feature the presenter/presentation but can't see what needs changing. So far (and I've watched Fieldsports TV for a long time with one particular episode showing my dog) I've not found anything I'm opposed to.
