Sticky96
Hi guys, I know many people have asked this kind of thing before, but I want to make sure that I'm not going to make a fool of myself in my interview and prove to the FEO that I am safe to handle a shotgun. What questions will he/she ask and what are the answers to them? Thanks, Sticky
bedwards1966
I was asked how far the shot will fallout - 290 yards being the best answer, if in doubt always err on the side of caution. You'll also be asked about safe gun handling, such as if someone hands you a gun-slip containing a gun what do you do? Obviously you check it isn't loaded, break the barrel if it's a break action, if it's a semi or a pump check the chamber is empty and cycle the action to ensure there are no cartridges in the magazine. It's all very basic stuff. It's hard to get them wrong, as it's all basic common sense, if you've ever handled a gun before you should know it. More to the point - FEO's tell you the answers! They're not there to test you, just to make sure you aren't a lunatic, and most of the interview is spent listening to them as they tell you about gun safety, the paperwork side of things, gun security, and answering any questions you have, don't be afraid to ask, and listen as they can have good advice. The whole thing won't take long, they'll check your cabinet is secure assuming it's installed. Edited April 19, 2012 by bedwards1966

I have handled firearms before so that shouldn't be too much of a problem, I'm just curious to know whether they are more cautious when considering a minor for an application? Am I right in thinking you're 15 and neither of your parents hold a SGC? I've no experience of your force area, they will defiantly want to know that your parents won't have access to the guns unless they hold a certificate. Some forces are worse than others, but they can worry that a young person won't (or can't) stop their parents getting hold of the guns if they demand them. You must satisfy the FEO that if your parents don't hold a SGC they won't have access to them under any circumstances. Other than that they'll just want to be happy that you're mature enough to be trusted with them, they might even want to speak to your school to check on you. I take it you know you can't buy a shotgun until your 18, it has to be gifted to you if you're between the age of 15-18? I'm not actually sure if the same applies to cartridges too. I'm actually 16 but that doesn't really make a difference as you have pointed out. Neither of my parents have an SGC but my Father will be getting one when finances allow for it, I hope that the FEO sees me as mature to handle firearms as I am actually a member of my schools Royal Marines CCF Detachment and am qualified to use the L98A2 5.56mm Cadet Rifle, I also have air rifles and have shot both live and blank firing centre fire rifles on a military range and shotguns on a clay pigeon ground. Thanks a ton for the advice, that has really put my mind at ease (sort of) Sticky
HDAV
Have they requested a parent is present? If not then it's down to you to satisfy the FEO you are not a danger

I know it's really easy for me to say this as I've been there and done this, plus gone onto getting a FAC - but don't worry, it's all quite easy. Almost all FEO's are helpful, and will see you get sorted out OK. Nothing to worry about (though it doesn't seem that way when waiting for the interview etc!). phaedra1106
And of course . . . . . . Don't forget to get a good supply of choccy Hobnobs or other quality biscuits in ready for the visit
Sticky96
Thanks for the very kind words everyone, you have definitely given a confidence boost for this interview. Once that is sorted I'm going to head to the Clay Ground and get my eye in, then I might see about having a trip out on the pigeons with any forum members that are willing to take a newbie with them that are local Sticky
