my first trout on the fly

I have been getting geared up to do some fly fishing over the last 18 months, recently got some casting tuition, and had a couple of days out (using a bit of wool) to practice the casting. I decided i was ready to have a go properly, and went along to Lakeside fishery (wymeswold) to have a go. the wind was not helping me much (felt like a gale) - but i managed to land my first trout on the fly, very saitisfying experience indeed, will be a nice summer activity to enjoy :good:

i have still got no idea about which flies to use, but i'm sure that will come. as a pike fisherman i tended to go with larger more fish like flies, but got some good advice from a couple of very helpful people on the bank, i started off retrieving quite quickly (another pike fishing tendency) but was put right by another helpful gent:

these two got eaten last night baked with butter, lemon and some thyme. served with minted peas and new potatoes - delicious :good:

Well done pegasus bridge. Got to warn you though, this could end up being another addiction....

I do a lot of fly fishing sea trout at night being a big favourite.

it is quite addictive, i nipped out again this morning for a couple of hours shooting, and on the way back managed another couple of hours fishing and my 3rd and 4th trout on the fly!

are the sea trout in rivers/estuary ?

Sea Trout are Brown Trout that go to sea when young to feed, then return to their rivers of birth to breed. Very much like salmon, if you are interested get Hugh Falkus book "Sea Trout Fishing" or Morgan & Harris Sea Trout Angling out of the library. Good books on the subject.

Well done get some wild brownies next time :good:

i think its only rainbows in the lake I fished, I have caught a fair few wild brownies before using a float fished brandling on the river taff in south wales, never bigger than half a pound though :good:

i do plan on having a go at a small river once i have stopped embarassing myself with my poor casting on landscaped man-made lakes!

had a 6lb wild brownie on 4lb trotting gear. Was the best fight of my life, an awesome, epic battle and one i always tell. Ive caught 100lb sturgeon, 40lb carp, but lb for lb, that fish was an absoloute warrior!

Well in low water they certainly are slightly easier to catch, being shy fish night time keeps you out of site from them. This is a very general comment, and there's lots to add. Have a read my friend you may be inspired....or put off. It never ceases to amaze me how many grown men are scared of the dark, this is not a joke, some rugger bug*rs i know would rather face a New Zealand pack than fish at night alone for sea trout!

Well done. Can't beat a bit of fly fishing. Thornton Reservoir is a good bet too, Ifor is the manager, a real good bloke. The website is www.flyfishthornton.co.uk It's about 10 minutes off the M1 at the Markfield/Coalville exit (can't for the life of me remember the Junct number!!!!) &5 acres, boat hire, day fishing tickets, tackle shop etc, Tight lines

Meant to write 75 acres, not "&5". ah well, it is Friday afternoon. 55 mins and counting until the 'Great Escape".
