scimitar
Just been dicussing sika in the Scottish borders, I am aware of the herd around peebles. My friend claims to have spotted sika around hawick. Does he need new glasses or has anyone else spotted sika in the hawick area. Thanx Scimitar. nathanhutchison
When I was at college, part of the course was a weeks stay in a Forrestry Commission(sp?) forest whilst following the on-site deer controllers on stalks. They were controlling roe and sika with about 5 sika taken in the week we were there (as well as about 2 dozen roe).
Novice
The issue has recently been discussed elsewhere. Consensus seems to be that they are definately pushing eastwards into the Hawick area and there is a good chance that some of the real pioneers have reached Keilder. Whether they will last long enough in there, once the rangers get onto them, is another matter entirely. They are an enigmatic species, but from a forestry point of view, no doubt it is preferable to nip them in the bud, rather than have them get established. Tommo
Considering the FC policy of zero tolerance and lamping, they unfortunately won't last long enough to get established. I know a ranger in that area who's Roe cull was set at almost 400 last year, and was told to shot every Sika on site, no matter of age or sex - this hasn't changed this year... Foe clarification I don't agree with their policy on deer, as established woodland suffers very little from damage as we all know.... T Not entirely correct, bole scoring just inside the tree line can be an issue with Sika and this effects mature trees leading to a dead tree and further damaging widfall timber in bad locations. With roe the damage is negligable on mature trees, but when new planting starts it aint so easy with a high population as they do so like to nip the growing tops off. All foresty is generally subject to a certain amount of re-planting
