TJ91
at what age do you start talking your dog out on the marsh/estuary for a flight? i guess beginning of season when its warmer and for a short flight would be better but how old, or does it depend more on the the dogs capabilities than its age? Actionpigeons
I think it depend on the dog. I have shot over labs as young as 10 months but some have been 18 months before I felt they were ready.
kent
A dogs ready when its ready, to rush things is to ruin them. Before you get there you dont realy know, some things go in fast and stick and give a feeling of optimism others slow. until they are all there though you just have to keep on with it, you can't spoil a dog by starting it a bit late but you might just by starting it a bit too early. They are not finished during thier first season though its just another training ground. things dont magically fix themselves in the field they tend to get worse
Cranfield
You should also take into account the condition and strength of the dog, if it is expected to retrieve from deep flowing water. There is a world of difference between sitting in a hide and picking up birds from a small pond, than having to go into a tidal estuary in November.
