TimmyG21
Hi Guys I am thinking about getting a new cocker puppy as i want to have a go at doing some field trialing. I have been offer a few pups from up and coming good quality litters. Any advice anyone can give me whos been there and done it? How did you get into the sport yourselves? Look forward to hearing from you all Regards, Tim
labstaff
I think a good thing to do is go to trials, watch, ask questions and learn. Trials will often need people to help (carry game etc). Its also a good way to see the runs closer up.

eccles
Hi I agree with labstaff get to see some trial dogs in action. Its is hard to get a dog trained to FT trial standard you need a hunting machine lol.Seen a lot of good working dogs which are awesome in the field, but just can't hack trials.Seen lots of novice trialer's turning up at there first trial with dogs that no where near the grade needed most don't even get through their first run. Buying a FTCH x FTCH pup does not even mean you are guaranteed a trial dog. If you do take up trialing you will have a great time. Some great people in the trial world and you will love handling the little cockers. All the best terry
bi9johnny
join a gundog club or three and go to as many events as you can.... be prepared for the click syndrome and what goes with trying to become part of it..... i did it some years back and found it a battle , lots of these clubs are built with people of many years standing and it is hard to get on an even playing field with everyone else..... i have a friend who is a breeder of champion x champion dogs and has to be a member of about a dozen clubs just to get the chance to apply to run his dogs good luck friend regards john

arwen3513
have a look at some of the results, this will give you an idea of names and breeders that are trailing. you can then look these up see if any are near you that you could go along and chat to. you will need to be a member of lots of clubs and societies, then you will get to hear whats going on and where. buying a pup now you will be looking at the following season so will have plenty of opportunities to attend a few, good luck jan
TimmyG21
Thanks guys. I am friends with Will Clulee, he has helped me train my first dog i had, just a good gundog, no where near trailing standards. He said i should have a go and hes there to help me along the way. I think i will get myself down to a couple of novice runs to see what the standards like. I when to the champs this year but thats obviously the best of the best running. Thanks guys
WGD
And be prepared to put in a lot of time and money getting to training ground and giving the dog the experience it needs to be polished, and then taking days off work, sometimes more than one depending on the distance, to attend trials. Not trying to put you off, but the above is the reason I don't trial at the moment - business, wife and two young kids makes it difficult to put the time in and get a dog to the required standard and I have no intention of turning up to make up the numbers. Best of luck though, if you can put in the time it needs to be successful I'm sure you will love it.

WGD
Tim - your last post was made as I was typing mine. If Will Clulee is your mate, I would be asking him about trialling... not an internet forum! Best of luck
