Called Out on the Rape

Recommended Posts

We had a call out from a Farmer Saturday morning saying that the pigeon were going in on his rape. When we arrived he was driving around on his quad checking his stock, this had the effect of putting a lot of birds into the air so we did not know which crop they had come off. We had a good chat and he suggested a couple of places that we could shoot and we said that we would look at them later. We left him and drove round another farm to let the birds settle down. On our return we found a few on a small hole in the barley and another small group on the rape. We walked the birds off the barley and waited none returned so we walked round the complete rape field and lifted about thirty birds. They were dropping in the centre of the field and also right next to a road. The rape was not flat just leaning and we would have done more damage to the crop if we had tried to decoy it and then pick up. The keeper caught up with us then and he said that the farmer said shoot from the road and just leave them in the rape which he had suggested to us. this would have meant that the foxes and the badgers would have been running through it and causing damage so the keeper suggested we leave it. As we drove away we noticed a small number on the wheat in a blow hole twenty metres in from the edge and decide to give it a go. It was real "Tin Can " shooting to try and drop them in the hole and not to damage the standing wheat we ended the day picking up fifty eight and had shot for just under three hours. You can just see the blow hole behind me in the picture
