borich
I had a call from the firearms officer last night and they are coming to see me at 2pm to do the home visit as part of my shotgun application. How long will this visit last and what can I expect during the course of the visit? Also how long from the point of the visit until they decide if to issue a license ? many thanks
kent
Its gonna be different to match the individual applicant. std questions might include how much you drink, the names of others in the house, what you intend to do with it and most importantly storage and security arrangements
walshie
Mine took about 30 mins. He ran through the basics of how to notify them if you buy or sell a gun, asked a couple of questions to see if I had any idea of gun safety, checked my security arrangements and that was it. Officially the FEO can't say yes or no, as he has to pass the info to his boss to authorise, but unofficially he can give you the nod that all is o.k. Took about 3 weeks from the visit till my shiny new SGC came through the door.
borich
Gun safety tips. Always carry the gun with the barrel broken, never point it at someone even if you think its loaded. What other general gun tips are there.
walshie
Always put the gun in the slip with the barrel broken, and close it once it is safely in there, reverse for taking it out. When passing a gun to anyone, always make sure it is broken. If someone passes you a gun, always check it is not loaded. If you are clay shooting ONLY ever load it when you are on the stand and ready to shoot. Close it "wood to metal" i.e leave the barrels pointing at the ground and raise the butt to close it. He also asked me how far a clay load would travel. Apparently the answer is 300 yards!
xav
20-30 minutes is the norm. They want to know where you intend to store the guns, if you belong to a club, what quarry you want to shoot etc...

Greymaster
Why not complete the location field in your profile then you might get a few answers specific to your area?

borich
The firearms officer just left and was happy with my cabinet location and I passed his common sense test. eg. safe handling of gun etc. He will be back to deliver the certificate and check the cabinet is fitted correctly in around 3 weeks time.
