If you are going to buy one of the 2, buy one of the brands with B!

1) Benelli (best auto ever......fact)

2) Beretta

3) Browning Maxus

Pumps are ok, but you have to come off target when pumping/reloading the gun, with a semi auto you can keep on the target and let another cartridge go. If you cant afford one of the above, buy an escort, use it for a year and save your money to buy something and keep for a long time. (this is what I did)

I now have an 8 shot Benelli with a 24" barrell and it is my favourite shotgun. Very reliable, great in a hide, never, ever jams (havnt cleaned it since god knows when) and it works, and I am a good shot with it, confirmed by my decoying companion on Saturday when I hit a good 50 yard speeding crosser with a sit down shot. :friends:

I'm afraid that statement isn't true, I have 2 pumps a Mossberg ATP 500 with a 24'' barrel and an 835 Ultimag with a 28'' barrel and if you practice before going out on live quarry you should be able quite easily to swing with a target fire and rack the action without loosing aim and pick up a second or third or even a forth target without a problem assuming your quick enough that is.

As regards to the ''they will cycle anything'' statement, as a whole they will, any of the 3'' chambered guns will take all shot loads and cartridge lengths up-to and including 3'' magnums (obviously if proofed for such shells and that said for steel shot as-well) but if you have a 3.5'' chambered gun as my 835 is they will not cycle 2.5'' shells as they tumble onto the shell lifter and jam whether or not this is just a trait with Mossberg guns I wouldn't like to say as I have had no experience with other makes of pumps.

What I can say is they are very easy to maintain, clean and use also great fun and very versatile.

the main issue though is if you want to practice you will have issues taking a pump to most clay grounds, it tends to put you in the John Wayne element of shooting. I'd have a semi every time jams are really only an issue if you buy a really cheap one and then maintain it badly, my B80 is ancient and has only jammed on me once and that was due to filling up with straw so entirely understandable

I have recently undertake the same reasearch as I needed a rough shooting sg. I shouldered and shot with both types and for me once I got over the worry that actually all semi's dont jam, I concluded I wanted a semi.

Having had one now for a month I have no regrets and even though I bought used, no jams todate after 250 shells.

You have to clean them but then I clear all my guns after shooting so no harm there. And the semi takes no longer to clean than my O/U once youve done it a few times.

Best advise is go and try a couple from either mates or on a shop loan.

Gotta say though I love the semi auto action .

Hmm, I've been to at least 6 different clay grounds quite often with my pump, and nobody gives a damn!

Currently, I only use pump- or lever-action and the Sporting crowd are always interested to see something a little different. (S.1 one is accepted at all but *one* ground.)

The DTL crowd gave us Icey Stares when we Pumped instead on Over-And-Undering. Mind you, manually-operated shotguns can break the "flow" of the more automata-like disciplines. (And, at the time, I *was* a newbie to shotguns.)

Regards,

Mark.

I am pretty sure now that I will go for a pump action. I have been out a few times recently and am getting better at handling and loading the over and under in the hide so I will probably wait for a second hand pump to come along before I buy one since the is no rush.
