Non starting V8 any ideas ?

Ok so its a 3.5L V8 running twin Zeniths, spark is yellow/orange and fuel is getting to the carbs

 

Heres the breakdown;

 

New Powerspark coil and module - Spark from coil to block through king (not tested with new module though as I changed this then the rain started)

New Powerspark king lead - still sparks

10 volts in and out of the coil terminals

Plug on end of number 2 lead to block through dizzy - orange/yellow spark to block

Fuel + WD40 spooned into carb, lifted piston thing inside of the carb so fuel went into manifold as its sticking

Cranks but wont fire

 

 

Standard rover V8 one with the water pump up top, running petrol, never been on LPG, was pressure tested and was good (3 months ago) no gunk in the rockers, rad or expansion

 

 

As this is the final stepping stone on my project any help would be appreciated, I've got a spare Facet gold flow fuel pump at home that could go on it if need be but wont be able to do that until next weekend. Pump thats on it is the standard one from a 2.25 petrol I think or maybe its the V8 one.

 

One thing I did notice is that when the fuel lines were off I tried blowing through the hose into the carb and couldn't at all!

try taking out plugs dry them out turn engin over with plugs out dry boreout put a little oil down bore replace plugs and try tow start .spark shud be blue sharp and crisp.

 

Sparks yellow and horrid :( needs more power I think so going to try and start it on easy start for now until I can bring my 1000a power pack over to connect it to

 

Plugs are fine though all measured today at just under 30thou, cant do a tow start as no seats, mot or tax

 

Its a V8 its ran out of fuel :whistling:

 

Possibly with the amount of fuel mist it was backfiring at me ;)

buy something jap,problem sorted :D

 

 

True but nothing sounds better than a proper old V8 ;) and jap ones just sound like hair driers

haha I know more about engines than most AA guys you're right there but still not as much as a landrover mechanic!

 

Spark should be blue which leads me believe I need more power, timing has been set by myself, spark leads re-done, new king lead, new power coil, module cleaned, dizzy tested

 

 

Going to re-check timing again as its gone from nothing to back firing to nearly firing today so hopefully a little more fettling and power and we'll be there :D

Concentrate on the spark, if it's yellow it's not right. It sounds like everything else is OK, easy start isn't likely to help much - it might get it to run, but it's never going to be right until the spark is a lovely blue color.

I can't immediately think of the reason your spark is wrong, but I'm sure that's your problem.

When I replaced the cylinder head gasket and valves in the wife's car (okay not a v8) when I pit it back together it wouldn't start turned out to be that I had put the cam sprockets back on the wrong way i.e the little pegs on the camshaft were in the wrong slot on the sprocket. I changed this and it fired straight away.

would say prob timing not firing the spark at the desired time! my old landy v8 used need re-timing in winter/summer ran like a dog an back fired all the time if i didn't fettle it i once had the entire high street drop to there knee's in terror one saturday afternoon not long after the warrington bomb attacks when the beast back fired :no:

I can't immediately think of the reason your spark is wrong, but I'm sure that's your problem.

 

Going to re-wire it when I get a chance and stick a new battery on it too but yeah cant see why its not sparking blue other than the possibility that the wire feeding it is made of two wires or the ignition coil is worn but I'm still thinking battery as I'm jump starting a dead battery from my disco one

would say prob timing not firing the spark at the desired time! my old landy v8 used need re-timing in winter/summer ran like a dog an back fired all the time if i didn't fettle it i once had the entire high street drop to there knee's in terror one saturday afternoon not long after the warrington bomb attacks when the beast back fired :no:

 

Timing going to re-do it tomorrow for a fourth time and make sure its dead on tdc 1 then move it a few degrees anti clockwise

Stick an electronic/different distributor on it?

 

Got one on, spark is yellow direct from brand new powerspark coil to block

 

does the old set up have a ballast resistor for the coil power, and does your new coil require 12+volts

 

 

Doesn't need one as electronic dizzy, still getting 12v to it (11.78)

I know it doesn't need one, but it sounds like your doing an engine swap into something that was previously powered by a 2 1/4, did that run a resister and if so had you removed it? 11.78 i suppose answers the question as most resisted systems run on 9, is 11.78 the battery voltage too (if it is i'd say it's goosed)? first thing, i think, should be to sort a decent battery and see if we can get that spark to look a little more healthy

 

are the plugs coming out wet?

Yep its been removed as far as I can see as I think it used to be a derv, I'm going to renew the ignition barrel to coil wire as its a bodge and possibly get a new barrel too just incase its a little ********

 

The battery needs replacing or a serious boost so I'll hook it up to the powerpack when I get my hands on it as thats what I used to use to power up my old V8 on points, the spark as you say definitely needs to be healthier as it should be a bright blue/white like lightning or a mig torch

 

Plugs are coming out wet

 

Going to re-time it today and see if I can find the original marks on the crank whilst using a head torch and some de-greaser

if the plugs are wet and you have already redone timing a few times i'd look more at that spark, getting a spark to jump the electrodes under compression is more difficult than in open air...... you only need an air / fuel charge and a spark at the right point to ignite it, if the timing was a little out you would have poping and back firing, get somone to crank it while you turn the dissy you should find a sweet spot where it at least does somthing ....... unless the spark fails

I'm going to make sure timing is right and put the dizzy pointing to pot 1 rather than 4 as it is right now just to make it easier to tune

 

It was popping yesterday and backfiring then after a little bit of re-routing the plugs (moved them back and forth one spot) I got exhaust gas to appear with no backfiring

 

Need more power though it should be getting more like 13v to the coil from the battery
