Evening all

Just a quick one for you. There appears to be a few topics on here regarding 10 bores and I've got the chance of an old SBS one for on the marsh. Been doing some investigation before i commit to it and was wondering if anyone knew anywhere in the lincs area that sells 10 bore cartridges? Or anywhere on the internet that sells them?

Any other comments would also be appreciated.

Cheers Everyone

You need to get him to send the gun off to be steel proofed too.

why? i have never personally known someone actually do this. The gun should be sound in all respects and choked no more than 1/2. I certainly have no thoughts towards sending mine off so someone can stamp the side and say its ok to do what i already have done

I am not a 10 bore owner now , but being an old gun I would have thought it would be wise to make sure it can handle the pressures of a modern steel cartridge. I have a 12 bore AYA no 3 ,3inch magnum and would never dream of firing a 3 inch steel through it without having it reproofed for steel shells. Do not want to have to keep counting my fingers after every flight.

There is a lot of difference in an average 10 bore and a 3" 12. I have a Zabala magnum 12 with practically skeet chokes in it, not as tight as i might like but ok as a result i dont put high pressure steel 3" through it and stick to std steel 2 3/4" . The same gun make and model but in the 10 which i also own is like comparing a tank with a transit van as regards the sheer heft and barrel wall thickness, lock up is as tight as you like i will happily fire any factory 10 steel load through it. The owner must make his own choices.

A respected lancashire gunsmith looked the 12 over and said " oficial line is any suitable length std pressure steel load" - " if it were mine i should fire any corredct length steel shell though it though". Dont want to sound cavalier but Proof will only put a couple over way over pressure shells down it and see if they can break it- if they cant they will say ok its good to go with std factory.

Interesting discussion there about steel proofing, its something i never really thought about. If i'm honest i just thought that steel proofing protected the barrells from damage internally from steel being harder. I just assumed if something could handle a big load of lead it'd be ok with steel.

I knew you couldn't fire steel through full chokes incase of it blowing the barrells but this has gave me something to think about.

http://www.partridge...o.uk/contactus/ have a chat with Ron. He is great. I buy all of my stuff from him including my new pup. He's really really good on price for everything especially cartridges. 99% certain he stocks 10's!

Smashing, i'll give him a shout. Cheers

I use a AYA no3 Magnam with 32gm steel 3 shot in a 3" case, these average 1470 fps at a pressure of 9000 psi, these are home-loaded from current recipes using mordern components...the AYA is proofed to 1200kgcm.....I googled this proof and found that it actually equals around 17000 psi, so as you can see, well within the safety limits of your gun and as long as you use the correct steel wad with open chokes your barrells will stay in their original condition...we actually chronoed this load and found the speed average was correct and they were very soft on the shoulder too, obviously I dont know what the shop bought loads are doing pressure wise?

best wishes ...Dale.
