sandspider
Hi all I've not managed to use my shotgun that much recently, and I've noticed that when it's left in my cabinet it gets a shallow growth of mouldy sort of stuff on the woodwork. It just wipes off (bit of a pain to get it all out of the chequering) and the metalwork is fine (VP90 in the cabinet) but I'd still rather get rid of it. This is on an oiled stock - I tried rubbing some tru-oil thoroughly into the woodwork, but the mould still came back. I don't really want to put a lightbulb into the cabinet, and I didn't get this mould problem last year - same gun. Any ideas on what I can do / rub on to stop it? (It doesn't grown on my CZ, which has a varnished finish, but I don't want to varnish the shotgun, nor do I want to strip the shotgun to get rid of the mould spores and re-oil the stock...). Oh, and using it more often doesn't seem to be an option at the moment! TIA. Giles
Andy135
Suspect that the spores might be growing somewhere in your cabinet. Does your cabinet have a foam pad in the bottom and/or a foam divider? If so I'd be inclined to take them out & wash them with some detergent, then dry them thoroughly. Might also be worth clearing out your cabinet and spraying the inside of it all over with some of that anti-mildew spray that's used in bathrooms & shower cubicles. Make sure it's all completely dry before putting your guns back - no idea what anti-mildew stuff would do to the finish of your woodwork or metalwork... Stour-boy
Had the same problem, gun cabinet was on an outside wall. Now changed location of cabinet to an inside wall and different room and that seemed to cure the problem. The original wall was North facing so I reckon temperature change and humidity might have something to do with it.
sandspider
Thanks chaps. The cabinet is mounted on an inside wall, but next to an outside wall (South-ish facing as it happens). Moving it is not really an option, but I think a good wash of the foam pads etc. in the cabinet and an anti-mould spray of the cabinet sounds like a good idea, to start with at least. Cheers. bi9johnny
get some scilica bags inside of your cabinet mate just in case of moisture
sandspider
I thought silica bags could suck the moisture out of gun stocks, and possibly crack them...?
