Priming/Painting Metal

Sure someone will know; what is the best process to sand/prime/repaint metal?

Its a set of railings that are currently black.

My thinking is:

- emery cloth over all railings (perhaps using two different grades? 80 then 200?)

- an all metal primer - any recommendation?

- two coats of black metal paint - any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks guys - my only concern is if this would be how a professional would go about it?

Aaah!, but a professional would want paying for it.

It's only a set of railings,

you have to get a sense of proportion with DIY - more time spent rubbing down, less available shooting time

I'm a car painter by trade, if the current paint was sound and not flaking, and I wanted a quick job. Then wire wool current paint for a key, degrease and paint. For a better job, use paint stripper to get back to bare metal, the key with 180 grit, acid etch primer, then an 2k epoxy primer then paint.
