A reminder about my 'Weapons'...

Bravo, well said.

I'll bet my bottom dollar that your FAC and SGC state firearms and shotguns respectively and that some numpty in the FLD is responsible for drafting the letter. I'd be inclined to write a nice letter to the guy who signed the certificates pointing this out. I don't suppose for one minute he intended for you to be legally in possession of several lethal weapons.

I agree with this post and would let my FLD office know about my concern over the use of the word "weapons " in their correspondence.

you had better write to the government and ask them to change thier definitions in the firearms acts then while you are at it!

I don't necesarily disagree with the arguments here. the issue is, if your guns/rifles aren't weapons but are 'firearms' then how do you define a firearm.. i think you are trying to compare apples with oranges..

look up the dictionary definition of firearm and what do you get?

I don't need to look up any definitions.I am simply stating that the use of the word "weapon" instead of firearm can be used by certain factors anti to the shooting fraternity to undermine the sport and I would object to the use of it when appertaining to the renewal of a firearm cert, in this instance.

You do need to look up the definition... you are trying to convince the police to change the definition of something when they have clearly used the correct terminology in law as per both the firearms acts and the dictionary.

I personally cannot stand the word obese... I would rather be called overweight, fat, blobby even.. I PERSONALLY feel the word obese is derogatory and insulting.... it isn't, it is the correct definition of my weight to height ratio.. Just because I feel that way doesn't mean the word is incorrect...

Just out of interest,I was listening to the J.Vine show this aft' when he mentioned to a senior PO he was interviewing about tattoos, the 'taser/blind fellah' incident, and the PO referred to the taser as a 'weapon'.Thinking about it,what else could you call it?A device?

Personally, how anyone refers to my firearms doesn't bother me at all, except perhaps the phrase 'deadly' weapons,as the media would report it.It's akin to motorcycles being described as 'dangerous', or knives as 'lethal'.They're inanimate objects.

Sorry for veering off-topic.

A taser is a weapon because it's designed and primarily used as a defensive tool (although is frequently used offensively as in this case :ermm: ).

To me the word weapon is almost a verb rather than a noun as it conveys intent - defensive or offensive use of an object. Hence why i don't like it being used to refer to S1 or S2 firearms

That doesn't alter the fact that the definition both legal and in the english language of a firearm is 'a weapon........'

I'm not arguing with anyone re the use of the word but you ain't going to get the legal establishment to change the definition of something just because you don't like the word!

If you are going to replace the word 'weapon' with something else that means the same as it does in the firearms act which the police are there to, well... police... what would you change it to... 'any lethal barreled _________' what? fill in the blank

But it's not a verb.... it's a noun
