kevmag
I'm thinking of getting a duck caller, i don't have decoys or anything. Can anyone give me some advice on calling ducks. Thanks.
kent
firstly practice a lot before you use it for real. You can get away with just deeks and staying quiet, indeed if you call at the wrong time it can make things harder. two basic calls to learn. 1. the hail call Quack, quack, quack in decending intencity to get the attention of passing duck not on your line 2. the feeding chatter to keep them on line when vocally attracted. Go and listen to real ducks and listen, there is no magic call only good and bad calling. Electronic callers or call recordings are illegal for the purpose of shooting birds BTW

.philmypower.
Great advice, I use and like the Primos duck caller, find it easy to use and have good success with it.
Albert 888
What type of duck are you after calling. The cheap acme mallard call works ok. Personally I dont use them as I am quite lucky to be able to call them vocally. But not geese.Check the rspb website for birds by name pick one and listen to the call.;-)
chrispti
Have a look on you tube for " Buck Gardner call orientation" , its a very good set of instructional videos.
kevmag
Thanks for the advice, Its mostly mallard and widgeon duck i'll be after, there could be more on the lake i'm not sure, If i was to go calling today, is it as "simple" as to go out somewhere in the lough and start calling the ducks or is it best to pick a good postion on the lake. chris o
Position will help yes you will have ducks going every were but if you see them regulary going to roughly the same spot all the time that's were you want to be. Best thing I can suggest and helps me is go and watch the birds for a few outings look for were there going ect and listen as kent has said to them for real best way mate. I can call geese with my calls no problem but the mallard call is rather difficult especilly the feeding chatter I have been practising with mine for months and still can't get the hang of it. But do your reconisance and it shud pay off.
kent
for the chatter vocalise "ticket, ticket, ticket" into your call. Widgeon "weeoo" is best made via sucking through a clasic brass widgeon trumpet or two de-primed short 12 bore brass ends (flare on slightly and fix the open ends together)
Wildfowler12
Mallard calling is difficult to master, if your quarry includes wigeon, it's far easier is use a good old fashioned brass whistle For me, I use a Buck Gardner Double Nasty. This is what works for me. Hail Call- WIT WIT WIT wit wit wit (getting quieter) Feeding Chuckle - duga duga duga duga (very fast) or tucka tucka tucka tucka Edited November 8, 2012 by Wildfowler12
