PIGEON SHOOTING IN POTTERS BAR AREA / GOFFS OAK ETC.

Recommended Posts

You had some response the other day to your post!

It is all about knocking on doors and getting out there, the shooting will not drop in your lap.

As Stubby stated, you have not introduced yourself to anyone on PW we know nothing of you.

Ask for help in getting a permission and people may help you by giving advice, and maybe an invite out. But you have to put yourself out, and start knocking on doors, hopefully it will happen for you quickly but experiance tells me it will be sometime.

Good luck

the sad thing is bakerboy, I have a piece of permission over in theydon bois that I rarely get to nowdays, its only small, but, it got me started, I would have been happy to introduce these guys to the farmer, had they bothered replying to the last post, or adding some info to their profile, or even an intro post in this forum

sadly they didn't, even though we/I could see that they did indeed read the replies and ignore them, so their quote of

"Were reliable" sadly fails on deaf ears now

the mobile phone app I use isn't that great and I'm new to this type of thing (forums etc) .so if it shows I have read the post, I probably haven't as my iPhone apps run even when I exit them. Bare with us. Apologies. Two of us are from north london, mid twentys and late 50s, (two of us). My friend has roughly 30 years experience and I have a few years. I work shifts and my friend is retired so mid week is when I have the majority of time off work ( I also have weekends off sometimes) .

Apologies again and sorry if we upset anyone. As I said before I'm new to all this forum stuff!

Thanks again

Last but not least my name is John and my friend is doug

I believe I checked twice whilst on my shift, however, whilst on my shifts I do glance at my texts, and people who call me but I never get a chance to reply unless in an emergency. Apologies once again, sorry if it appears as though I reply when I want, genuinely that's not the case.

Firstly identify where the Farms are.

Dress smart, no camo clothing when visiting the Farmer and avoid meal times.

Inform the Farmer what you can do for him other than just shooting, do you have a transferable skill, electrics plumbing etc.

If the Farmer is not availalable or even if he is, have a letter stating what you can do, your contact details, any references that you may have.

You say that you can shoot during the week, that is a bonus, emphasise it.

Ask for a one day/afternoon trial, make sure you do your reconnaissance before you shoot to ensure that you are where the birds are, not where you want the birds to be.

Don't give up and be prepared for lots of "NO l already have plenty of people shooting" and if you have seen a field full of birds make sure you tell the Farmer.

Be relaxed and do not do the hard sell act, gently gently is the quickest way forward

GOOD LUCK

adding to what terry has stated, my local farmer had alreay told me he had enough pigeon shooters, even after I offered free of charge pest control across the board including moles, as I knew he paid out for another pest control firm,

I did have the farmers mobile number, for the next three weeks I would pass fields of his, see woodies and text him, xx amount of pigeons on such and such field, get your pigeon shooters out here, I only did this on week days, same as you, lots of free mid week days, knowing his shooters were probably only weekend shooters, by the third week of texts, I received a reply text back, asking if I would take care of them for him, SUCCESS, I only shot weekdays, so as not to pi$$ off the weekend guys, but also received sole permission to do the rabbit control

Baker boy and stubby thanks for the advice, I appreciate it. I will continue to ask around and definitely will use the advice you have given. Thanks guys appreciate it.

By the way I noticed that I think stubby said he may have been able to introduce me to one of the first farms he gained permission from. Is that still the case? Or have I misunderstood ?

Thanks again all

yes and no, lets see how you get on under your own steam at first, filling in profiles, new members introductions etc , understandably you want somewhere, and your not the first or last to be looking

I'm in the same area and have been door knocking round here for a local permission for 5 years. Have had straight "no thanks" from most and have had "try again in the future" off a couple that I've managed to get their numbers, called up every six months and still had no luck.

First bit of advice is dont give up trying. Keep watching the fields and knock on the doors when the pigeons are hitting the crops.

Second bit of advice is fill out your personal details on here and put something into the forum before trying to take a lot out. Go to events and meets, get to know people, get to know people on the forum through discussion even if its through asking questions. You haven't told anyone what experience you have if any. You haven't said what you've already done to try to gain permission.

Yes it's a shooting forum but the most valuable thing to everyone is permission to shoot, so I doubt someone will simply offer you a permission just like that.

Have you tried going to a clay ground where you will meet like minded people? Maybe do some beating.

With respect, I doubt you've even done a search regards gaining permission because you would have found countless threads where newbies come on here asking for permission and thought a little more carefully about your approach.

We're a friendly lot even though it may not seem that way, but you ain't going to get much help if you don't start by helping yourself.

I wish you all the luck In gaining permission, I really do, as I know what it's like when you can't get out.

Is there definitely no chance of being introduced to the farmer that you know as previously stated ? J

seriously jon, read my above posts/replies, notice how I mention filling in ones profile, or putting up an introduction post about yourself, its because 100's of people like yourself come on here asking the same questions, expecting it all, with little or no effort from themselves, when this does not happen, most are never heard of again, as COSD points out, permission is hard to come by, so anyone offering it out wants to be sure of that person, Im a pestie and it still took me 5yrs to get my first permission, now I made the offer to see if you was one of those types that wanted it on a plate, still I see no profile filled in, still I see no introduction post on the new members section, what I do see is want, want, want, without any effort

after placing that post, Ive had other members here contact me, who like yourself are permission less, but members for 2yrs plus, filled out profiles, a few hundred posts joining in discussions and not want, want, want posts

who do you think deserves the helping hand more :hmm:

  • 3 weeks later...

I always feel very awkward when asking for help like this. Not wanting to sound like you are a p*** taker makes me agonize over it until I end up writing nothing. It is hard for new lads though. I'm finding it difficult enough even though I have previous experience. Moving to a new area like me or starting in an area you know - it can be difficult to know where to start.

That said this lad doesn't appear to have helped himself a lot though. Give him the benefit of the doubt though - he could be out knocking on doors like the rest of us?
