diseases in rabbits?

Hello all,

me and my shooting partner are fairly new to vermin control (3-ish months weve been at it now, and loving it :D ) and a couple of times weve opened up bunnies to find what can only be described as "growths" in the bunnies and weve buried the carcass as we thought it wouldnt be suitable for human consumption. just wondering if anyone else has experience with this, ive taken a few pictures but im having trouble loading them up (theyre to big apparently and i have no idea how to resize them!) i cut one "growth" open and found what can only be described as "eggs" inside so im guessing this is from some type of fly larvae? growth was positioned mainly on the back of the animal and was located between layers of muscle.

second growth was BIG! in a male and ran half the length of his body just between the spine and organs, not very firm, quite spongy actually, and an odd yellow-ish colour. either way it didnt look right so we ditched them in a hole with the rest of the guts from the other rabbits.

on second thought its probably good i cant put the pictures on, if an anti saw them theyd probably go nuts!

anyone got any idea what these could be?

Hi, if you found sacs with clear fluid and little white eggs in, in the muscle tissue, then in my experience they are tapeworm larvae. The other growth you describe, I've never heard of, so can't help with that. Myxi usually shows externally in some form or another, so I don't think it's myxi.

HTH :shifty:

near bottom of page, did it look like that?

Also would be cautious about eating, more likely to pick this type up from dogs though I think:

Parasites although usually gross are quite an interesting bunch of organisms - there's one which infects an ants brain and makes it climb to the top of a blade of grass so it's eaten by a sheep so the parasite can infect it. Pretty cool.

Occassionally get rabbits with white spots on the liver. Understand it is a parasite called Coccidiosis which infects the liver and tissues. I've generally found it in younger rabbits. The liver is quite swollen, depending on the infection. I have had one where the liver is nearly half the gut cavity. Not surprisingly they go in the hedge for the foxes.
