Dempy
22.250 is a cracking round, but you can buy a .243 and use 55 grain factory ammo and it will perform like a 22.250. two guns in one box

coyotemaster
I might add whatever caliber you can afford to shoot frequently as this is what makes good rifle shooters. Put me in for the .223 vote as they seem to be inherently accurate and not terribly noisy 40-50vmax and you are good to 300yds. SSS
I shoot a treble two and it does the job just fine out to sensible ranges. Plenty cheap enough to shoot. Any 22 calibre is good, as is any 6mm. .204 ruger if you want fast, loud and angry! All the best

soother223
223 for me! especially for lamp work! got to be honest i think 243 is a bit much gun for foxing under the lamp unless you wanna use a sledge hammer to crack a nut... down here the fields ain't that big so don't really shoot past 200 at night so 223 will do that with ease! shot past 300 in the day just as easily! had a few different shooters over the years got to say 223 has been the best!
