bigolbear
HI I'm am a bit of a photographer and thought I would try to imitate the photographs you see in the advertising blurb, the result so far fr you comments
humperdingle
The lighting is probably a bit harsh, mate - Needs to be more diffused... And maybe a background either plain or related to shooting.
bigolbear
Yep , used flash not a good idea, will have another try . T`ks
Billy.
Kill the flash for starters. Drop the F Stop down as low as possible and use something like aperture priority mode. Have you used any editing software at all? Edited December 17, 2012 by Billy.
humperdingle
Daylight on a cloudy day is generally good lighting... Figure out what you want the actual focus of the subject to be... The depth of field on this one is fairly shallow, which can be good, but the shot isn't really focussing on anything in particular.
Alan Maughan
You need lots of diffused light either indoors or out, good product photography is all about managing light and highlighting detail. Backgrounds are best either plain or out of focus to highlight the detail you want to show on the product. As has been suggested you could crank your lens as wide as it will go to get a shallow depth of field (DOF) and then try and accentuate a single part of the gun. The DOF you can get will be determined by how wide your lens will go along with your focal length. A shallow depth of field draws the viewers eye to where you want them to look, like these cartridges or the engraving Here and here.

If I was to shoot that same gun at that angle I would look for a plain background in a neutral, black, beige or warm coloured background, you can buy pieces of coloured A4 paper very easily and is great for backgrounds, as things stand the pattern on your background is drawing our eyes away from the gun which is your main subject. I would then focus on either the makers name on the underside of the action or the engraving on the side, either way you are accentuating a feature and it will draw the viewers eye to it. Billy.
If you got that gun on an antique card table or resting over the arm of a Chesterfield, you'd get a good look.

Billy.
Perhaps a vintage, say, 50's look might suit that pic. I'm not shopping that flash out though. I really should sleep. Catweazle
Personally I think that photo needs more depth of field, not less. Get some bright lights and stop it down.
oldfeller
if you can ,use off camera flash and light from the back . use a reflector in front to fill in reflected light . angle the gun up slightly.
