Pigeon Paul
Now can I preserve it and get it white? I have just read and looked at a lot of Internet sites and to be honest I am more confused now than when I started! Do I need to boil it still (there is still some tissue attached to the back of the skull) and if so do I need to add anything to the water? Can someone please give me a beginners guide to the peroxide process? Thanks. Edited December 22, 2012 by Pigeon Paul

Pigeon Paul
Bio wash? Normal washing powder? How much too use and boil for how long?
Tommo
Boil it in clean water up to the base of the antlers, being carefully not to hang the antlers over the side to burn. Once boiled pressure wash - then it'll be completely clean, once clean sit in a jug of watered down peroxide (strong if the staining is bad) leave it in for 24hrs then wash off and it'll be done. Saw it whichever way you want - see on line for ideas to mount- Job done

carlosdesilva
nice find! On a more morbid note, has anyone had the misfortune of stumbling across a human body?A keeper friend of mine has found 2,one on a beach in wales, some one having fallen of a ferry, and a car with hosepipe from exhaust ,suicide in oxford!Well thats his story and his sticking to it!Lol
Pigeon Paul
Yes all six points still on. Just weighed it and its 714 grams. Only a slight amount of skin left on the rear of the skull (no brain matter). Tried to measure the antlers with a tape measure and overall length from base to tip is approx 28 cm. Just off to borrow a pot to boil it in! Edited December 23, 2012 by Pigeon Paul
sako751sg
Quite possibly a gold fella, cracking find.Let us know what it dries doon to but at the very least you have a high end silver. Pearling and coronets poorish, but cracking length, good span and looks like it should have decent volume too. Pigeon Paul
Thanks again Sako. It has obviously been pretty well stripped clean by the local wildlife and bugs, would you still boil it for an hour? I have never tackled a head before and as it is such a good one, I am concerned I could ruin it!

Me personally,i would peroxide creme it overnight first and see what it comes oot like before boiling. As you have said there is no matter left on it,but if there is i would boil it,so if its clean it should come up ok.Ive done plenty of minging ones that havent been boiled and they come up fine.Sometimes boiling them can make the skull disintegrate a wee bit but as said yours looks like an older beast so it shouldnt be a problem. sandgrounder
I wouldn't boil that....its been degrading long enough naturally so anything left on the skull should remove easily enough with a bit of persuasion. Get some 6% peroxide and cotton wool from the chemist...carefully wrap the skull in cotton wool filling all the holes then gently pour the peroxide all over being careful non goes on the antlers. Give it 6hrs initially then have a look how its going...if necessary repeat the bleaching. I wouldn't go for a 24hr bleach initially as if its overdone you get a white 'bloom' which sloughs off like chalk and looks crappy
Pigeon Paul
Sorry to drag up an old one but........ "Numby" as he is known as in our house has been sitting on display in our dining room for over a year now.... I have finally got round to weighing him and having a rough measure up..... He weighs in at 635 grams, he has a span of 18.5cm and average antler length of 27 cm's. The only measurement I cannot really do at home is the volume and looking at other heads in this months Sporting rifle, I am not sure he would get that high. I am curious to hear what anyone else thinks?? Edited February 9, 2014 by Pigeon Paul
shootgun
Nice! You should get it mounted on a nice oakwood shield plaque...
