Steel proof

Recommended Posts

Hi all have asked on here before if I can use steel loads through my browning 325 grade 1 shotgun, a nice chap came on and said I could use standard steel loads through it, but went into greenfields gun shop in Salisbury today to buy some steel carts. And was told I can not even use the standard steel loads through my gun, does anyone really no or which person is right?

My first gun was a 325, and I used standard steel loads through it with no problems at all. Check the chokes and you'll see they're marked for lead and steel. :good:

Providing you use fairly open chokes (1/4 - 1/2) in your 325 you should be ok with the standard steel loads. The only reason Greenfields may have advised against their use is if its a fixed choke gun and the chokes are tighter than 1/2. The 325 range pre-dates the intro of proofing for high performance steel, and I would have thought it unlikely that someone would put it up for HP steel proof with all the inherent risk. Be aware of the risk of firing even a standard steel load through 3/4 or full choke they can bulge the barrel or worse as the shot passes through the choke section and a new set of barrels will probably outweigh the cost of the gun. If you are only firing a handfull of cartridges per outing why not take a deep breath and buy a box of Tungsten Matrix.

Thanks for all your help chaps, I decided to not risk putting steel through it for now and bought some elegy bismuth carts instead, nearly fell over when I got told it was £42 a box of twenty five! How much would the tungsten matrix be and is there anything else I could use that's non toxic

Yesterday I was charged £38 for 25 36g #5 and £25 for 10 36g #3.

I had to take in a very deep breath.

Have seen eley bismuth for £27 for 25 30g #5 recently.

Hi there, I've been using a 3" aya no3 s/s 12g all season for wildfowling, I have to use "steel loads" and have been homeloading some and a few shop bought loads as well...the gun is bored quarter and quarter...and the barrels are like "mirrors" inside...steel carts are loaded with "steel wads" which do not allow the shot to come in contact whith the barrels!!...even in a steel proofed gun the shot still does not touch the barrel walls..just make sure the pressure conforms to whats stamped on your gun...kgs / psi etc it can all be converted on google if your unsure and you'll have no problem!..the fleur.de leys. stamp only means its a newish gun, your proof marks tell you whats safe, in your gun, pressure wise!!....no tighter than half choke though!!!

Lyalvale Express Hunting Steel 32g 3's for guns proofed to 850bars and they recommend that you don't exceed 1/2 choke. I paid about £6.00 a box and they sure stop duck and geese at medium range.

Browing 325 is proofed to 850 bar it is stamped on the lugs.

Browing chokes are maked
