wildfowl jon
Hi all I have read about people using full or 3/4 after market chokes with big steel loads with great success. I'm using a SBE2 at the moment with standard chokes which limits me to half choke with large steel loads and aren't impressed with the patterns achieved. My questions are do the after market chokes make a that much difference and if so which make / choking are you using? Cheers Jon
B B
I use several aftermarket chokes in various guns for steel shot and yes i use tighter than 3/4 choke, the patterns are significantly improved with the aftermarket chokes generally. In my ten gold for example i have three aftermarket chokes a briley IM and two terror chokes i got four years ago a .720 and a .705 which when you look at my golds bore of .777 of an inch that's some choke constriction. I have a SBE 2 and it did struggle to pattern any shot size bigger than 2s but i fitted a .675 terror and this choke transformed the guns capabilities with BB size shot . Now not wanting to dilute anything i have said but just to remind you, these are my findings with my guns and my loads, the only sure way of knowing what a gun choke mix will work like is to pattern your gun load and choke, but in my opinion if i were to take one gamble on buying an aftermarket choke tube for a 12bore shooting steel at typical uk foreshore ranges i would buy a terror .675 and it its a ten get a .720 terror i do not think you will get better. anser2
I use a HLS Undertaker full choke .700 regulated for BB and BBB steel shot and makes a huge difference for long shots at geese. However until you get used to the very tight patterns they take a little getting use to. There is little margin for error with 70% patterns at 50 yards. PS do not take close shots with such tight chokes if you want to eat the goose.
Grandalf
I shoot a SBE that has only 26" tubes. Patternmaster Code Black duck choke does the business. Certainly don't want it any tighter.
wildfowl jon
Thanks chaps, . I'll have a look at these, seems like its exactly what im after. I expect the tight patterns will take a little getting used to but i'd rather have a tight patten and drop what I hit. At the moment I have found exactly the same as you B B, anything larger than size 2 and the pattern is useless, which for me means no goose shooting wth steel. jon
