The way that I see it most cars that do lots of mpg have two things in common the first is lots of plastic to keep the wait down and lots of electronics that can go wrong if you can afford to buy a newish one you can get good mpg but as they get older they get more expensive to repair in other words sell it on and buy a newer one.

Don't go with what the book says, mine is a 2008 an 45,000 on the clock and all I get is 31.5 mpg thats on the car computer and actual checking miles to fuel used and I do 50 mile trips most days, don't know were they get the over 40mpg and mine is up an down the A9 not town driving.
